This series has possibilities, but there is a lot of groundwork that has to take place. In an effort to avoid the usual, much effort is made to come up with new expressions. Example: visage instead of face. Variety may be the spice of life, but the end result of this is a stilted, artificial presentation.
When will authors learn that badly is an adverb and not an adjective. If you're unhappy or ill, you feel bad. If you feel badly your fingers are probably frozen and are not sensitive to feeling. After having someone say he feels "badly" three times in two sentences, the author has the other character tell him "Don't feel bad." Go figure.
The conversations between characters do not ring true. Everyone speaks the same as everyone else. There doesn't have to be a character using bad language for differentiation, but it would be nice if individual personalities came through with a little variety.

It's not terrible but it's not good. You can finish the book quickly which is good, but it repeats nearly the same thing over and over. It could really be a 40 or 50 page short story.

Dr. Pamela Evanshen holds a Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis and is currently an Associate Professor and Program Coordinator for the Early Childhood Education Program in the Human Development and Learning Department at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, TN. Dr. Evanshen has published articles in many educational journals and has presented at conferences nationally and internationally. She worked as the Assistant Principal at George Washington Elementary School, a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence in Kingsport, TN. Janet Faulk has been a teacher at the preschool, elementary, middle school, and college levels in both public and private institutions, and has worked as an educational diagnostician with students in Pre-K through 12th grade settings. Currently, she is an Assistant Professor of undergraduate and graduate students at Milligan College in Tennessee.

Easy to read research for any teacher!!!

Loved the book. The authors use sounds research to justify a fresh look at our classroom environments. This easy to read book not only relates theories surrounding classroom environments but also give readers many visual representations of the "theories in practice." Thanks to Faulk and Evanshen, I have adjusted my classroom environment to faciliate learning. The book will be a help to all educators. Principals and District Supervisors should keep a copy of this book on hand when evaluating classroom environments and for future planning of their schools.

.....all words no substance. These ideas have been written numerous times by different writers. What you want is positive psychology that is something your life can bite into and make real change. No hocus pocus of mind manifestations.. If your really interested in this psychology implementations, start with books by Martin Seligman.

As a horse racing fan and equestrian enthusiast there are many horses that stand out to me as most remarkable athletes within their chosen field; whether that be jumping over the highest of fences at Hickstead or the Eventing dream ride for Piggy French at Badminton horse trials, I could quite easily make a list of top racehorses that have gone down in history books as world-class greats. Paul Nicholls is an incredible and well established racing trainer whose horse Kauto Star has really stood out as an impressive creature, winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup twice in a row. His noble face makes for a striking front cover to this autobiography of a most remarkable man, who had what he calls a `lucky break' in his training career and something which I feel is most deserved. This narrative is an honest account of Paul Nicholl's astonishing transformation from a keen pony lover and amateur jockey to a record breaking champion horse trainer, with over one thousand seven hundred winners over jumps. He stands at the very pinnacle of the sport with many big-race victories including those achieved by two stand-out horses; Kauto Star and Denman (also known affectionately as `the tank'). Fast-paced and exciting you are taken on a most extraordinary journey from Gymkhana's at the Pony Club and pony racing on flighty little animals to when Paul's dreams of becoming a jockey were crushed due to his weight and the years of torment when he rode at two stone under his natural weight. This determined and single-minded man then turned to the training of these magnificent creatures and started up a yard from nothing, with eight horses and very small savings alongside limitless ambition and willpower. The rivalry between Martin Pipe (another incredible trainer) and Paul is explained in all intensity, as too is the story of my two favorite racehorses who won the Gold Cup at Cheltenham three times between them.
This is a compelling and truly fascinating sports biography that is uplifting, enthusing and thought-provoking to the core about a man who fought hard to get to the top. Overcoming all obstacles along the way Paul Nicholls journey is one of hardship, willpower and fortitude that would inspire many a horse rider or individual who has a career or dreams of a career within the equine industry in any sphere. Complete with beautiful photographs of his life, family and riding pursuits this is a book to treasure as to are the wonderful photographs within of the phenomenal Kauto Star and the lovely Denman being two distinctive horses that Paul Nicholls has been most lucky with. This insight into the not always so glamorous world of horse racing and tough world of training is quite breathtaking, and at the same time candid in its honesty where Paul tells all to his readers. Any equestrian cannot help but be touched by this man's tale of dreams and aspirations, of hardship, fortitude and love for a sometimes fickle sport that is based on chance and a lot of luck.

Comprehensive and Open

I can't imagine a better introduction to students of Organizations. The writing is clear, and assumes no background knowledge (I had none). Yet it is a deeply informative and thought-provoking book. A friend of mine in the M&O PhD program at Michigan (Davis' home department) says that you could pass preliminary exams if you memorized (*really* memorized) everything in the book. Unlike most textbooks, Scott and Davis actually locate the "perspectives" in current conversations.

Really Understanding Organizations

I really appreciate that book. That got me excited about teaching my Organization Theory class. What I like the most about it is that it does give a very good overview of where we stand in terms of the organizational form as such. It also provides some interesting food for thought in terms of the implied goals and actually carried-out functions of organizations that kept me (and still keep me) ruminating about some of the material and how it affects our daily lives. Additionally, because of the prominence of organizations in our society, the book can be informative in many different ways (including understanding better our economy and some of the conflicts we experience on a daily basis). I wonder about the interpretation of the current social and economical landscape that the authors could offer. There is a good summary discussion at the end with thoughts about current and future organizational (societal) issues. The style of the book, however, is not a bestseller popular style; it is definitely more academic than popular press.

Become a (sorta)instant (sorta)expert on organizations! In one book!

I came to this text with very little organizational theory background but this text really shored up that front of things. It's written concisely, if you have trained yourself to gloss over citations, of which there are many, but this is a graduate level text so you better get used to citations. The text nicely borrows across the theoretical disciplines contributing to organizational theory: management, industrial psychology, sociology, etc. It's a textbook but it's almost like reading the primary texts because it directly refers to and compares different theories and empirical studies.

Oh, and I took the course with Davis himself, really fun guy, his humor does show through in some portions of text.

About the Author

Strobe Talbott is president of the Brookings Institution. He served as deputy secretary of state from 1994 to 2001. For twenty-one years prior to his service in government, he was correspondent and columnist for Time magazine. He has written nine books, including The Russia Hand: A Memoir of Presidential Diplomacy (Random House, 2002), a personal account of U.S. diplomacy toward Russia during the Clinton administration.

Strobe and Jaswant's Excellent Adventure

Strobe Talbot's memoir begins in 1998 when the Vajpayee Government in India shocked the world by conducting the Pokran II nuclear tests. The State Department - Talbot's employer - learned about the tests from CNN, and the CIA learned about them from the State Department. (The CIA used to know things.) The foreign service officer in charge of the State Department's bureau of intelligence and research wryly remarked, " It looks like we're all having a bad government day."

Talbot was the Clinton's Administration's resident expert on Russian-affairs, but after the tests (Pakistan followed with nuclear tests two weeks later), he was immediately reassigned as the point person and crisis manager for South Asia. His assignment was to persuade India to limit the development and deployment of their nuclear weapons; this included the signing of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT). Talbot and his Indian counterpart Jaswant Singh met fourteen times over the last two and half years of the Clinton administration. This extended dialog between Talbot and Singh ended with Talbot's failure to persuade India to accept any restraints on its nuclear weapons program - which came as no surprise to either Talbot or Singh. The dialog -the engagement of India - brought many unintended benefits.

Treaties such as the Non Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and the (CTBT) are, from an Indian perspective, discriminatory and condescending against everyone except the original five nuclear powers. The nuclear option was seen by the Vajpayee Government, and especially by the right-leaning nationalists of the Bharatiya Janata Party, as not only a realistic defense policy, but also a tool for achieving great power status. They never had any intention of signing the CTBT. Talbot, for his part, was dealing with a weak hand because the Republican senators in the US were aslo unwilling to endorse the treaty.

What became valuable was the engagement itself in that it altered the direction of US-Indian relations from one of mutual estrangement to one of trust and cooperation. This was illustrated during the 1999 invasion by Pakistan of the Kargil area of Kashmir. As President Clinton was holding talks with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif of Pakistan to halt the invasion, he was at the same time consulting Vajpayee and seeking his advice. This so impressed the Indian side that it paved the way for Clinton's historic visit in 2000.

One of the fascinating things about this book is the personality of Jaswant Singh. Singh hails from Rajasthan where his intimate experience with Islamic extremism pushed him toward's the BJP's staunch Hindu idealogy. He had presciently warned Talbot that America did not fully appreciate the dangers of radical Islam. And regarding Pakistan, Singh was opposed to the very idea of Pakistan; the partition that took place more than fifty years ago had been a huge mistake. He noted with characteristic flair that, "Kashmir should be understood as an objectification of Pakistan's predicament as a lost soul among nations, an ersatz country whose founders' only legacy was a permanent reminder of what a tragic mistake partition had been." In the end, Talbot's own views on Islamic extremism and Pakistan had come closer to Singh's.

"Engaging India" is a fascinating account of the behind-the-scenes diplomacy that led to the improvement of US-Indian relations after fifty years of mistust. With India's growing economic and military power the Bush Administration has wisely decided to shelve the nuclear dispute and opt for military and strategic cooperation. We can only hope that it continues to be an excellent adventure.

Refreshing, relatively speaking that is

Clearly Mr. Talbott has a favorable opinion of India and that alone is, I suspect, music to many an Indian's ears. Having said that, this book made me realize how little, in terms of appreciation for India and its core values, I have come to expect out of American leaders and diplomats past and present alike. While Mr.Talbott faithfully presents all the Indian arguments against the NPT, he fails to acknowledge, in spite of his relative security in retirement from public office, that those arguments make sense to ANY fair and balanced person, not necessarily Indian. Mr. Talbott, rather conveniently, switches to his I-was-just-a-state-department-peon hat to steer clear of commentary about the discriminatory and seriously flawed NPT. In the absence of that basic acknowledgement, I am unable to take to heart any of his criticisms, however justified, about India's social structure and body politic.

Mr.Talbott would have us believe that the "hyphenation" of India and Pakistan, that Jaswant Singh takes exception to, is a justifiable association rooted in common sense, while in fact, it is actually a result of a deliberate and successful cold war effort on the US State Department's part to equate the two countries.

Does Mr Talbott expect us to believe that only the purest and most innocent of assessments led to the prevalent notion in much of the western media that India and Pakistan are somehow "rivals", when in fact India is 7 times as populous as Pakistan, has an economy almost 10 times that of Pakistan, and has a system of governance that couldn't contrast any more sharply against Pakistan's?

In fact, so wildly successful has this disinformation campaign been, that any Indian suggestion to the contrary is dismissed as yet another indication of the free flowing cross-border vitriol.

To Mr. Talbott's credit he has made an honest and refreshing attempt to put into perspective the relative importance of India and Pakistan to the global world order. But I am afraid it's not enough. Not enough for the average American who needs a nuanced worldview more and more, and not enough for the average Indian who needs certificates from America less and less.

This is a powerful ex-official in Clinton administration who has seen it all and describes how Pakistan is responsible for helping terrorists.
