Textbook for an HCI class I took. The author appears to enjoy listening to himself talk, and cite sources of other people. It's a difficult read because of the author's chosen style and sentence structure.

A good first look into HCI
By D. Wilson
My instructor used this as the textbook for an intro to HCI class a year ago. It gives a great overview of terminology and what questions you should be asking yourself.

I never purchased this book, since I lived a few minutes away from the library which allowed members to check it out for reading in-library. If you have access to a library which has this on reference, I'd probably recommend skimming through it.

That being said, I don't think it would be a waste of money to purchase this book. I find myself looking up the titles in this book's table-of-contents whenever I'm working on some kind of user-facing hardware or software interface, as a reminder of the things I should be aware of. It would probably be nice to have the full book available on my bookshelf.

Rebel Heart: An American Rock 'n' Roll Journey, by Bebe Buell, Victor Bockris

How does a girl get from a Catholic school in Virginia to Mick Jagger's hotel room in two short years? In the early '70s, when rock stars were becoming the new royalty and models were their consorts and muses, Bebe Buell hit New York hard. One of Eileen Ford's most promising new faces, Bebe worked with the best of them (Scavullo, Avedon), and flowered in a city that was home to her first and enduring passion:rock music. Max's Kansas City was her stage, and Bebe was the star meeting everyone from Warhol to Dali, and captivating a generation of rock's greatest talents. Her relationships ranged from wunderkind Todd Rundgren to Aerosmith's Steven Tyler, from Jagger to rock's wordsmith Elvis Costello. Not to mention the fun she had with everyone from Rod Stewart to Ron Wood, David Bowie to Jack Nicholson. Rabel Heart drops readers right back into rock's heyday and is full of detail that deepens even the most ardent fan's understanding of the '70s and '80s rock scene.

From Publishers Weekly
High-spirited teenager Bebe Buell didn't want to stay home in Virginia in the early 1970s; she knew she was destined for a faster paced life. After graduating from high school, she ran away to Virginia Beach to escape her father's strict military discipline. She returned home, but, with her mother's support, soon moved to New York and became a moderately successful Eileen Ford model. However, even more appealing to Bebe was the world of rock music. She became a groupie of sorts hanging out with Todd Rundgren, Andy Warhol and Iggy Pop. (She's said to have provided some of the inspiration for Kate Hudson's character in Almost Famous.) In addition to Bebe's sexual exploits with celebrities (the list is long; highlights include David Bowie, Elvis Costello, Rod Stewart), she served as a muse and actual wordsmith, recording with the Cars in 1980: "I was never on a quest for sex itself. In fact, to me, it's the hardest part of a relationship. I was always on a quest for rock 'n' roll." From the 1970s to the 1990s, she drifted from man to man and drugs of various sorts, with the one stable force being her daughter, Liv Tyler, by Aerosmith's Steven Tyler. While some aging boomers may relish another account of the good old, bad old days of rock and roll, this memoir is disappointing. Bebe's raucous life amid glam rockers and glitterati sure sounds fun, but her story adds little to what has already been documented about these times. Photos not seen by PW. (Aug.)

From Library Journal
When rock took its first giant steps in the mid-1960s, there was Pamela Des Barres (I'm with the Band: Confessions of a Groupie. o.p.); when it blew its wad in the late 1970s, there was Bebe Buell, ex-Ford model and Playboy centerfold. The former proudly calls herself a groupie, the latter insists on muse. Buell's garrulous account/defense of her rock'n'roll lifestyle, which produced actress Liv Tyler (her illegitimate daughter by Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler), lacks a sense of humor; looking back on that much excess has to be somewhat funny. Charges of pretentiousness are beside the point, though. One must judge a memoir of this type by its juiciness, and this rates an eight. Todd Rundgren, Mick Jagger, Jerry Hall, Iggy Pop, Debbie Harry, David Bowie, and Jimmy Page aside, Buell dishes on the great unrequited love of her life, Elvis Costello, who was married to his first wife when Buell conceived a child (she later aborted it and regrets it to this day). Writes Buell, "I can very proudly say that when I was involved with Elvis, he made some of the greatest records of his career." Recommended for celebrity sickos, 1970s rock fans, and larger public library music collections. (Photographs not seen.) Heather McCormack, "Library Journal"

From Booklist
Back in the early 1970s, Buell left Virginia to become a model in New York. But her true passion was rock and roll, and rather than pursuing her modeling career, she started hanging out with, dating, and inspiring rock stars. She began with Todd Rundgren but also cavorted with the likes of Mick Jagger, David Bowie, and Jimmy Page. A brief but intense affair with Steven Tyler of Aerosmith led to the birth of her daughter, Liv, but because of Tyler's drug use, Bebe decided to tell Liv that Rundgren was her father. Bebe and Todd split up for good soon after Liv's birth, and then she met the love of her life, Elvis Costello. Meanwhile, she tried to start a rock career but ended up putting the careers of the men in her life and later her daughter before her own ambitions. With veteran rock coauthor Bockris' help, her writing is conversational and up front, conveying her colorful personality well and making for an energetic memoir. Kristine Huntley

An interpersonal journey many of us would like to have shared!
By J. Lavoie
As a young model, jet set traveler and a born lover of music ( which included writing it and performing in bands), Bebe was quite lucky to have been at an age which she could share relationships with the rock n' roll people of bands many of us would like to read about by someone on the inside, rather than a biographer. She was definitely not a groupie, but fell in love many times with the most famous of them all. You will learn a lot about her lovers and friends from America to Europe, as many of her modeling engagements were done across the Atlantic.

She was very lucky to have a mother and family who were willing to take on raising her child, while she did all of the above. That child turned out to be a fascinating person in her own right...Liv Tyler. Beautiful woman now, just as her mum had been and most likely still is.

If you are like me, interested in getting to know more about the rock bands of the 1960-s and up, especially the time of the British Invasion, than this might fascinate you.
I recommend this book to those who are interested in Bebe's life due to her endless energy, in learning more than our share of intimacies and other knowledge of her relationships with those of the most famous rock band legends in the world!
I just hesitate to recommend it to those who are not mature enough for unnecessary sex, drugs and rock and roll, because it is quite explicit. So please don't read it due to those reasons as they are often acted out--rather than just touched upon. She lays it all out there. Good book!

An Interesting Read, but BeBe is a Legend Only in Her Mind
By Sweet Pandora
I enjoyed reading this book, however, the subject's take on herself is unrealistic at best. She certainly had sex with an impressive (and long) list of mainly famous rock stars, with a couple movie stars tossed in briefly. She literally was a groupie which is nothing to be proud of actually. None of these stars married her, she wasn't their girlfriend except for Todd Rundgren off and on for 5 yrs & he marries someone else. She eventually married at 37 and yet carried on about this unrequited love for Elvis Costello. I don't see how she saw herself as a muse for him or that he was dedicating his songs to her memory or that he loved her. This man would literally RUN from her when he saw her coming. He would surround himself with bodyguards so she couldn't acost him backstage. He never answered any of her numerous calls, letters or public interviews to entice him to contact her over many years. She writes how her husband Coyote, needed a green card to become a U.S. citizen from Canada, which he obtained by marrying her. That made me wonder about his true intentions.

She also sounded stalkerish with Costello and Tyler. I thought there might be alot more mentioned with Steven Tyler, which is what prompted me to read the book. I was disappointed to see there wasn't a whole lot there on Tyler's part for her and she thought she was pregnant 3 weeks after they met. Preconceived? This would prove to be the smartest and most profitable event BeBe would do with her life. I found it interesting on a VH1 Behind The Music interview with Tyler, he specifically makes it a point to state he broke up with BeBe.

It irked me when she compares herself frequently to what she has accomplished in her life being equal to Liv and Steven, which is preposterous to me. I had never heard of BeBe, her band or her as a model until Tyler was linked to being Liv's father. Liv Tyler made herself very wealthy by becoming a highly successful actress and model. Tyler made his fortune and fame by becoming a legendary singer & having one of the greatest bands in the world for 40+ yrs. BeBe made her money by having sex with alot of celebrities and living off other people. She made a very good living by managing her rich and famous daughter's careers coupled with Tyler's more than adequate child support. Liv eventually fires her when she becomes an adult.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but I see nothing impressive that BeBe Buell did in her life to write such a glowing rendition of herself and to compare herself to immensely successful people that achieved greatness on their own. There's no doubt from all the pictures that BeBe was very pretty in her youth and still attractive on the cover of the book, but certainly not the special mind blowing beauty she kept reminding us over and over and over. Does she really think "Almost Famous" was written about her? Really? And I had to actually laugh when I read how she thinks Prince's "Little Red Corvette" is about her. "baby you're much too fast" are lyrics in the song and he's pronouncing baby like bebe. If you listen to alot of Prince which I did in the 80's, it's how this man says the word, "baby". Add to that she freely admits they've never known each other.

I found this woman irritating yet abit amusing too. With her vast self love of herself and frequent boasting of how special she was to these lovers, how much she helped them with their music, I believed it to be mostly in her head. She's a legend in her own mind. I think BeBe had to look at her life through large rose colored glasses in order to be able to accept the way things always turned out for her with men. Perhaps she was much more attractive on the outside than on the inside and too vain and self absorbed for a lasting relationship. If you can stand the conceit and irrationality of the way she looked at herself and her life, you will enjoy this book. I finished it in a couple days and it was a very interesting read. Why I gave it 4 stars.

Fast paced book
By A Customer
I like Bebe Buell, and even got her ep Cover Girl when I was a kid. Thought she was good so I had to get this book. It's fast paced and enjoyable to an extent. The only problem is that you dont get a real feel for some of the rock stars she boinked, because she's too busy writing about how they all react to her and how fabulous and beautiful everyone thinks she is. OK, we get it, Bebe. you're beautiful! Also she's a little rough on Todd Rundgren, who helped her out alot. Her justifications for leaving her kid for months at a time to chase someone are a bit lame (as is her reasons for not using bith control!)
But some of her stories are good, especially the ones on Jimmy Page, Mick Jagger, and Jack Nicholson. It just would have been better if she could have stopped talking about herself so much and more about her friends (like Liz Derringer, etc.)and the other people who helped her.
Edit: It seems that both Elvis Costello and Todd Rundren have both said that her story is less that truthful regarding them, so who knows what else isn't true.

Amazon.com Review
A sweeping portrait of an age, this book--the 11th and final volume in Will and Ariel Durant's Story of Civilization series--makes Napoleon its hero. The Durants, capable of switching from art to science to warfare with ease and skill, rank among the world's great popular historians. This adroitness requires some condensation: the description of Waterloo, for instance, takes up about three pages. If you want a detailed history of Napoleon's battle orders, look elsewhere, but if you want to understand the age and the man--in that order--The Age of Napoleon is a great place to begin.

About the Author
Will Durant (1885 1981) was awarded the Pulitzer Prize (1968) and the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1977). He spent more than fifty years writing his critically acclaimed eleven-volume series, "The Story of Civilization" (the later volumes written in conjunction with his wife, Ariel). A champion of human rights issues, such as the brotherhood of man and social reform, long before such issues were popular, Durant s writing still educates and entertains readers around the world.

Ariel Durant (1898-1981) was a Russian-born American researcher and writer and the coauthor of the eleven-volum"Story of Civilization"with her husband Will Durant. Ariel and Will Durant were jointly awarded the Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction in 1968 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977. Ariel was named the 1977 Woman of the Year by the city of Los Angeles

Stefan Rudnicki is an award winning audiobook narrator, director and producer. He was born in Poland and now resides in Studio City, California. He has narrated more than three hundred audiobooks and has participated in over a thousand as a writer, producer, or director. He is a recipient of multiple Audie Awards and "AudioFile" Earphones Awards as well as a Grammy Award, a Bram Stoker Award, and a Ray Bradbury Award. He received "AudioFile" s award for 2008 Best Voice in Science Fiction and Fantasy. Along with a cast of other narrators, Rudnicki has read a number of Orson Scott Card's best-selling science fiction novels. He worked extensively with many other science fiction authors, including David Weber and Ben Bova. In reviewing the twentieth anniversary edition audiobook of Card s "Ender's Game", "Publishers Weekly" stated, "Rudnicki, with his lulling, sonorous voice, does a fine job articulating Ender's inner struggle between the kind, peaceful boy he wants to be and the savage, violent actions he is frequently forced to take." Rudnicki is also a stage actor and director.

Excellent overview of the Napoleonic period
By Ney
The Durant's have done an excellent job in capturing the flavor of the era of Napoleon. The book gives you an excellent overview of military, social, religious, philosophic, and moral attitudes of the day. One should keep in mind, however, that the book is an overview and thus does not deal too deeply with any one subject. This should not be seen as a flaw however but a product of the aim of the work, to summarize the conditions during Napoleon's time. The book is easy to read and is written to be understood by the average reader. A definite must have for any French history or Napoleon buff.

The Eleventh Volume in The Story of Civilization!
By Guerrilla Reader
In this, the eleventh volume in the critically acclaimed series "The Story of Civilization," Dr. Will and Ariel Durant have compiled a masterly recount of the incredible sequence of events that led Europe out of the Enlightenment and into the Age of Democracy.

The reader is treated to a detailed narration of: The revolution in France. The revolutionary leaders such as Robespierre. Marat. The rise of Napoleon. The fall of Napoleon. The life of Napoleon. The poetry of Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron and Shelley. The philosophy of Schelling and Hegel. The music of Beethoven. And much, much more including plates and maps.

Written to stand alone or within the landmark series, the Durants have composed a historical retelling in smooth prose which is easy to read and understand by both professional and layperson alike. In short, this book is for everyone interested in European history. A benchmark in a class of its own, I rate this text at five stars. Wonderful!

The last volume of a comprehensive study
By Doug Erlandson
It has been several years since I began reading through the volumes of "The Story of Civilization" by Will and Ariel Durant. (Will authored the first several himself. He and his wife collaborated on the last five volumes.) I did not read them in chronological order but, starting with the "The Reformation," I branched out from there. Every volume was a sheer joy to read, and I was actually a bit sad when I finished this project a couple years ago and realized that there were no more volumes to read.

The title of the series ("The Story of Civilization") is accurate. Each volume is far more than a survey of the geopolitical scene of the age. It includes the intellectual and cultural history, the religious history, the arts, and the literature of the age as well. Although this precludes any one thing from being covered in tremendous depth, nothing is covered superficially. With every volume somewhere between 800 and more than a thousand pages in length, this is possible.

The "Age of Napoleon" covers a fairly small number of years of European history compared to some of the other volumes in this set. (For example, the "Age of Faith" covers a span of nearly a thousand years from the time of Constantine to the beginning of the fourteenth century.) But what significant years these were. The Durants detail the years of the French revolution and the rise and eventual fall of Napoleon. They also cover the Hapsburg dynasty during this era in some detail. And, of course, in addition to all this, they discuss the cultural history of the era at some length.

When I came to the end of this volume I only wished that the Durants had been able to write the subsequent history of civilization. However, Will died in 1981, six years after the publication of this final volume. (When it was published in 1975 Will was already in his ninetieth year.) The Durants had given me great pleasure. Their departure from the scene merely made me hungry for more.

THE PRINCESS. . .
One reckless teenage night, well-to-do April Hollis tempted a boy from the wrong side of the tracks, and it changed her life forever. Motorcycle riding, leather jacket-clad Jesse Cawthorne was everything her family forbade: poor, dangerous, with no future that they could see. A man who would only break April’s heart. But April couldn’t resist Jesse, and they spent a lost, tempestuous summer together.

THE PAUPER. . .
As summer turned to fall, however, Jesse realized April was playing with his feelings, and his terrible pride forced them apart. He believed she was what he’d always thought: a spoiled, little rich girls from Windsor Estates. And knowing he would never fit into her wealthy world, he fled.

THE RECKONING. . .
Now, ten years later, Jesse was back, and he and April were forced to confront the same impossible passion that had once held them in thrall . . . and damn the consequences.

One word? BAD
By Amazon Customer
Usually I love this type of book, but not this one. April was so stupid. Her boyfriend kissed another girl, so she went to a party with him. He made out with same girl at the party, she disappears with strange motercycle man. Her boyfriend sleeps with same said girl, she goes to a graduation party with him. I could barely make it through two chapters, much less finish the book. April was so stupid.

The Princess and the Pauper
By Elizabeth Creason
The only reason this book didn't get five stars was because I was just amazed at all of the typos in the book. It also had passages where it would have a word, and you would have to guess what word was actually supposed to go there. I was very disappointed in that. Other that the horrid typos, it was a good story. I did feel like the way April and Jesse would one minute be civil to each other and the next minute be bitter enemies was just a little too much. I felt like it dragged on too much. That truly are my only complaints of the book. And I truly should not be complaining about the typos because after all, it WAS a free book. Thank you for that!

Needs work..
By Angie
The book was poorly edited. There were wrong words (two instead of too), missing words, misplaced words and spelling mistakes that kept me from enjoying this book. The story is about 2 people from different sides of the track who fall in love and then end up apart. Circumstances bring them back together with obstacles to overcome while dealing with their feelings for each other. It wasn't anything new but it could have been an enjoyable read if the editing was better.

This best-selling text presents the best synthesis of current scholarship available to emphasize the theme of expansionism and its manifestations. The inclusion of recently declassified documents allows for new perspectives on American intervention in the Bolshevik Revolution, the origins of the Cold War and the Korean War, and the Cuban missile crisis. The Sixth Edition includes strong coverage of gender and culture and explores the racial dimensions of American expansionist ideology. Up-to-date coverage of national security and its implications allows students to examine the government's role in protecting citizens.

Financial Modeling is now the standard text for explaining the implementation of financial models in Excel. This long-awaited fourth edition maintains the "cookbook" features and Excel dependence that have made the previous editions so popular. As in previous editions, basic and advanced models in the areas of corporate finance, portfolio management, options, and bonds are explained with detailed Excel spreadsheets. Sections on technical aspects of Excel and on the use of Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) round out the book to make Financial Modeling a complete guide for the financial modeler.

The new edition of Financial Modeling includes a number of innovations. A new section explains the principles of Monte Carlo methods and their application to portfolio management and exotic option valuation. A new chapter discusses term structure modeling, with special emphasis on the Nelson-Siegel model. The discussion of corporate valuation using pro forma models has been rounded out with the introduction of a new, simple model for corporate valuation based on accounting data and a minimal number of valuation parameters.

Review

I've found earlier editions of Simon Benninga's Financial Modeling to be a great reference, and I've used them often. The fourth edition again offers helpful tips for using Excel in the most efficient and powerful manner to solve finance problems. These tips are illustrated in clear, step-by-step fashion so that the reader can start using them right away. The fourth edition also offers an improved flow of topics within the primary headings of Corporate Finance and Valuation, Portfolio Models, Valuation of Options, Valuing Bonds, and Monte Carlo Methods, along with updated examples and exercises. Financial Modeling continues to be a valuable resource for practicing finance professionals, students, and professors.

(Robert A. Taggart, Professor of Finance, Carroll School of Management, Boston College)

The Best Choice for Fundamental Financial Modeling
By Bachelier
I have used Simon Benninga's "Financial Modeling with Excel" for five years to teach undergraduate computational finance [...]. My thinking remains that my students have been well served by this textbook.

The inadequacies that limit my assessment to four stars and need to be addressed in the third edition are: 1) frustrating errors in the text and models, for which the errata sheet and corrected models (available at: [...] only improve, but do not heal. My students find new, undocumented, errors each semester. 2) the data sets and examples are getting, frankly, a little old. It is the year 2005 as I write this, but the data sets and examples end in 1999, a year in which my current students were in high school. 3) the models, while excellent as introductions to the field, are now at the point of being fundamental, rather than exemplary. This is not Prof. Benninga's fault, but as the other reviews from professionals here attest, Excel modeling has advanced in all fields (option pricing, financial statements, portfolio optimization, bond metrics, etc). When this volume was introduced, it was adequate for helping MBA and Master of Science in Finance students build essential modeling skills. Sadly, it now is only appropriate for raw beginners or undergraduates. A new text with a larger scope that addresses advances in the fields is called for. 4) While it is a subject in itself, the book is seriously hindered by not introducing basic Monte Carlo simulation in Excel. 5) No information on downloading data from BLOOMBERG, REUTERS, and other historical and market data providers. It would add to the scope of the text, but 6) fitting DCF models to yield curves also would be welcome.

Even with these criticisms, Benninga's Financial Modeling remains the best book in the field for what it seeks to accomplish. It covers the major topics of finance that are appropriately addressed with models: financial statement, firm valuation and credit metrics, portfolio construction, fixed income metrics, option pricing, etc. Benninga's FM also compares favorably with his two nearest competitors.

Powel and Baker's "The Art of Spreadsheet Modeling" is a two pronged monster: it seeks to be a meta-level theoretical work on spreadsheet modeling, and then introduces modeling Monte Carlo simulation as a fundamental component of Excel (a student edition of CrystalBall is included in the text, and is the only reason to buy this book). The gap between the two is a Grand Canyon's worth of knowledge space that this text does not fill in and nearly ignores. The student who uses only Powel and Baker is ill served; whereas if he uses Benninga, he knows how, why, when and what to model. Consider Powel & Baker as sketches of a concept car with simulated wind tunnel runs, whereas Benninga shows how to build your own kit car and drive it around. Powel and Baker's concept car is beautiful, advanced, gracious, but doesn't exist and doesn't run; Benninga's kit car is like a Lotus Super Seven: simple, runs, is a blast to drive, but is dangerous in heavy traffic and you would not want to go on a 1,000 mile journey with it (i.e. or build a DCF model for the Goldman Sachs LBO team with only Benninga).

Chandan Sengupta's "Financial Modeling Using Excel and VBA" is the only book that comes close to Benninga, and I recommend it as another perspective for my students who want to continue with financial modeling. However, Sengupta's work is flawed on two counts: 1) it is clear throughout that he had read Benninga, and 2) he dropped much of Benninga's content in favor of adding wordy explanatory paragraphs to soften the blow of the fact that modeling is mathematically and technically both boring and intense work. With those criticisms in mind, his work still has neater, leaner, more compressed models with updated contemporary detail.

There are three other books, Scott Proctor's "Building Financial Models with Microsoft Excel: A Guide for Business Professionals," which focuses on building vanilla financial statements, as does John Tjia "Building Financial Models." Mary Jackson & Mike Staunton's "Advanced Modeling in Finance using Excel and VBA" is also now dated and seriously flawed and limited in scope), however it is the next step following Benninga.

For those working in top-tier banks, the internal training and modeling documents, and examples built by colleagues, will likely surpass by light years what is offered in these books. And so for beginners, Benninga remains the the best choice and first step, until something better comes along, or Benninga himself produces a new edition.

the single most useful book for finance students and professionals ever published
By Bachelier
Simon Benninga's 3rd Edition of Financial Modelling with Excel is the single most useful book for finance students and professionals ever published and continues to offer an outstanding reference and textbook for students and practitioners of applied finance.

For further information, please use the "Look Inside" feature and examine the Table of Contents carefully, because I will emphasize selected portions.

It is difficult to overstate how useful and practical and helpful this work is for a wide audience and Financial Modelling is the single finance book I recommend for everyone after they have taken (or read themselves) Introductory Finance.

For those looking for "one-stop-shopping" for models that resemble those of professional financial analysts then there is no better value than Benninga's FM3.

Benninga's FM3 is a coal-face work for those who must make financial decisions using models. There are further specialist texts in topics covered here (credit modelling, portfolio construction, option pricing), but the models in FM3 are the first advanced models applied to loans, bonds, options, and equity portfolios. Master these and then specialized texts are easier to digest.

"Cookbook" metaphors are too strong and do not do this work justice, for Financial Modelling 3rd (FM3) is not a mere collection of recipes but rather topical introduction, explanation, and then direct technique.

If we can make a comparison with a "cookbook" then FM3 falls somewhere between "The Joy of Cooking" and "Mastering the Art of French Cooking." "Joy" combines chapters on technique, ingredients, and tools with dense pages of endless recipes, whereas "Mastering" emphasises technique and a few well-selected recipes.

The welcome new chapters cover bank valuation, the Black-Litterman approach to portfolio optimization, and Monte Carlo methods and applications to option pricing, and the previous 2nd edition's small chapter on using array functions and formulas has been expanded. The chapter on data downloads from YAHOO is also welcome, especially for those on a budget.

There is a single significant flaw in the work, which is excusable and redeemable. Far too often the discounting in the chapters is done over a flat interest rate curve. While the term structure of interest rates is covered, and historical term structures and parallel shifts and steepening and flattening is covered in isolation in a thorough chapter and with wonderful data files, the necessity and explicit connection of discounting from an appropriate yield curve is left implied and only mentioned in a few exercises. I would have preferred a "round up" chapter where each of the subjects treated (bond discounting, portfolio expected returns, options, etc.) under a yield curve with advanced models. Sure BLOOMBERG and REUTERS have these sort of things (often incorrectly) programmed, but students need to learn explicitly about them and do the exercise themselves to comprehend the importance of curve discounting.

The CD attached in the back of the book is alone worth the price, with over two score of models that are practical and adaptable for students and professionals alike. The files are stored and separated according to chapters and subject matter. Each file has logical progression of the concepts advanced in the book, and each separate sheet either stands alone or appropriately links to data and models on other sheets, so editing for your own purposes is a breeze.

For those who want to train themselves in Finance (not "personal finance") then I suggest reading Copeland, Weston, & Shastri's Financial Theory and Corporate Policy (4th Edition) and Brealey, Myers, and Marcus's "Corporate Finance" and "Investments" followed by working through FM3. Such a course would give any self-disciplined person the equivalent of a Masters of Science in Finance.

Full disclosure: I am thanked in the "Acknowledgements" for providing a few helpful comments on the second edition.

Quick Tip
By SelfTraining
Rather then comment extensively on the content of the book (as others have done rather well), I felt like I would pass this tip (which I wish I had known to prevent frustration). I feel that anyone without a working knowledge of Visual Basic, and manuevering around Excel should obtain the skill set with the well written technical sections. I would suggest starting with part VI introduction to Visual Basic (chapters 36-41) then moving on to Technical Consideration (chapters 29-35) and THEN moving onto the substantial matter of the first 4 parts. This will help keep you from getting frustrated while interacting with the software and allow you to focus on the concepts. Again this is only for individuals without a working knowledge of the platforms, if you do possess those skills then the above recommendation is a moot point.
