Ideal as a stand-alone supplement in any science course, The Scientific Endeavor creates a framework for students' future coursework in the sciences by discussing what science is and how it is done. Presenting all of the major topics and basic underpinnings of science in a clear, simplified manner, the book provides a generic view that isn't tied to any specific discipline. Students develop "scientific literacy" that will help them better understand and appreciate their mainstream science courses.

Great stuff, but WAY overpriced
By ARH
I teach a university-level senior seminar course in biology, and I was strongly considering using this interesting little book, but it has it's downside. First though, the plusses...

The book is well-written, and the author covers interesting and timely topics including:

- an introduction to the practice of science

- what and how one goes about doing research

- what is means to be part of the community of science

- scientific ethics

...and other topics.

It is also short enough to be easily digestible while covering an interesting range of topics.

Now for the minuses (well, one BIG minus). When I had nearly decided to adopt this book for my course I checked the per copy price and found a $43 price tag!!! I was expecting something in the $10-20 range. Sticker shock was more than enough to put me off, and I will not require my students to pay that much for this short book.

The book is only 186pp, it's paperbound, and is only about 1/4" thick.

I hope that the author and his publisher will take note of this feedback. They would have made an institutional sale if they hadn't set the price so high.

I give the book 5 stars for content, presentation, and applicability, but loss of a star (and a sale) for the excessive price tag on this book.

Very Good Read - Get the Wheels Turning in Your Head
By B. Blebs
This is a great book for those pursuing scientific study, but it is also a great piece of writing on critical thinking - something which is largely lacking in today's society. Lee's writing is easy to follow and understand, and he makes very sound arguments without them coming off as attacks (e.g. in the pseudoscience chapter). Topics include philosophy of science, scientific misconduct, critical thinking, pseudoscience, research, and the scientific method. This book was the course "text" for the honours thesis course at my undergraduate university. I never read it then, but I'm glad I did now as I pursue a graduate degree.

Good and Helpful!
By N. Carlton
This book by Dr. Lee is very well written, and is easy to understand. I have not read all of it, but a near majority of it. This book makes several different aspects of science interesting. I have him as a professor, and he is a really good educator. Maybe he will read this and give me an A. But if he doesnt, thats fine too...Ill work on the A myself. But honestly, this is a very well written book. It is very interesting and helpful to grasp some deep scientific knowledge.

The Almoravid and Almohad Empires (The Edinburgh History of the Islamic Empires), by Amira Bennison

This is the first book in English to provide a comprehensive account of the rise and fall of the Almoravids and the Almohads, the two most important Berber dynasties of the medieval Islamic west, an area that encompassed southern Spain and Portugal, Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. The Sanhaja Almoravids emerged from the Sahara in the 1050s to conquer vast territories and halt the Christian advance in Iberia. They were replaced a century later by their rivals, the Almohads, supported by the Masmuda Berbers of the High Atlas. Although both have often been seen as uncouth, religiously intolerant tribesmen who undermined the high culture of al-Andalus, this book argues that the eleventh to thirteenth centuries were crucial to the Islamisation of the Maghrib, its integration into the Islamic cultural sphere, and its emergence as a key player in the western Mediterranean, and that much of this was due to these oft-neglected Berber empires.

The Arab-Israeli Conflict, by Kirsten E. Schulze

In this fully revised new edition, Kirsten Schulze brings us to a new understanding of the causes, course and consequences of the Arab-Israeli Conflict. Schulze analyses the dynamics of the violence and explores the numerous attempts at resolving the conflict. She assesses why, in the cases of Israel-Egypt in 1978 and Israel-Jordan in 1994, negotiations succeeded in bringing about a lasting peace and why, in the cases of Israel, and the Palestinians, Syria and Lebanon, they failed to do so.Written in a clear and accessible style, this fully updated second edition:

Traces the origins of the conflict from their first intellectual roots in the 19th century.

Examines the actions and aims of the competing nationalist movements during the period of the British Mandate which led to the creation of the state of Israel.

Outlines and analyses each of the Arab-Israeli conflicts from the creation of the state of Israel in 1948 to the 2006 Lebanon war and the on-going, second Palestinian uprising

With a diverse collection of documents and a Chronology, Glossary, Guide to Further Reading, and a Who’s Who summarizing the careers and contributions of the main figures, this book is absolutely vital to understanding the current Israeli-Palestinian violence, the intra-Palestinian rift between Hamas and Fatah, and why the Arab-Israeli conflict has become the centre of Muslim politics, both violent and non-violent, across the world.

Good primer.
By G M
Summarised in just under 100 pages, this is a good read for anyone looking for a brief overview of the conflict. It doesn't do much editorialising, though - so if you're looking for a strong, penetrating view from a heavyweight, this is really more chronicle than commentary. Excellent start, though.

A good introduction to the Arab-Israeli conflict
By J. Brandt
Schulze's book is not an in depth look at the problems in the Arab-Israeli issue, but is a good introduction to how the problems grew quickly starting in the late 19th century. The main points of conflict discussed briefly with various documents also being included in the back of the text to help you get a better idea of some of the treaties and agreements that have been used starting with the Balfour Agreement.

It's a quick read and will help anyone learn more about the current conflict and the roots of how the conflict began.

Great book, but know what you're getting
By T.
This book is very good, but I think people should be aware of what they're buying before they buy it. This book discusses some Buddhist concepts that are behind Vipassana meditation, and discusses why people meditate, and what the short term and long term benefits to meditation are. What the book is short on, however, is the specifics of how to meditate, although it does discuss that in a short section. Instead of it focuses more on the why.

It's still a very enlightening and spiritual book that I recommend reading, which is why I gave it 4 stars. However if what you are looking for specifically is a step-by-step instructional, you may want to get another book in addition to this one.

EDIT: I wanted to edit my original review to add that I have since found a better book when it comes to actual instruction on Insight or Vipassana meditation: Mindfulness in Plain English. While I still recommend Goldstein's book when it comes to philosophically investigating the reasons behind meditation, Mindfulness in Plain English has more in terms of explicit step-by-step instructions for meditating, which I think would benefit someone totally new to the practice more.

This book is SUPERB!
By Gary E Barna
I'm currently an Internet Software Engineer, using primarily Servlets and EJB technologies, and I was hoping to find a book that could give me a good reason to consider using JSPs. THIS IS THE BOOK. I now completely understand the purpose of JSPs, and where they fit into the Java Architecture. You will too, once you read this book.
Phil Hanna has compiled a superbly organized and useful book. He builds on concepts logically, and provides awesome examples to help the info sink in. (I can't over-emphasize the usefulness of the examples in this book!) The examples of using JSP Tag Extensions are particularly wonderful. This is perhaps the most confusing and powerful part of JSPs, and Mr. Hanna makes it SO much easier to understand.
If you want to learn JSPs and add them to your arsenal of programming wizardry, look no further! I wish that all of the technical books in my library were written this well.

Impossible Things, by Connie Willis

Winner of six Nebula and two Hugo awards for her fiction, Connie Willis is acclaimed for her gifted imagination and bold invention. Here are eleven of her finest stories, surprising tales in which the impossible becomes real, the real becomes impossible, and strangeness lurks at every turn.

The end of the world comes not with a bang but a series of whimpers over many years in "The Last of the Winnebagos."

The terror of pain and dying gives birth to a startling truth about the nature of the stars, a principle known as the "Schwarzschild Radius."

In "Spice Pogrom," an outrageous colony in outer space becomes the setting for a screwball comedy of bizarre complications, mistaken identities, far-too-friendly aliens--and even true love.

From Publishers Weekly
Willis ( Lincoln's Dreams ) demonstrates her sly wit and quirky perspective in this solid collection of 11 previously published science fiction pieces. Romance becomes entangled with interplanetary negotiations when a Navy linguist and the neglected fiancee of an officious NASA diplomat try to keep a visiting alien happy--even though language problems obscure whether the powers-that-be are arranging a space program or a spice pogrom. In a story that will look like SF only to readers who have steered clear of higher education lately, a consultant promoting "relevantness" and modern pedagogical theory nips at the heels of professors teaching paleontology at a state university. During the Battle of Britain, a Civil Defense worker gains a disturbing insight into himself and the war from a mysterious volunteer who has an uncanny ability to locate bombing victims buried under rubble. Willis's fondness for Shakespeare translates into two stories: one considers how much text would be left intact if all right-wing, left-wing and special-interest groups could delete the bits of which they do not approve; the other tackles the old conundrum, If Shakespeare wasn't Shakespeare, who was?

From School Library Journal
YA?This must-have collection includes several of Willis's prize-winning (Hugo and Nebula) stories. Any library buffeted by the winds of censorship needs to include "Ado," a hilarious send-up in which the attempt to please everyone is carried to its logical extreme. "Spice Pogrom" makes it clear exactly how difficult real communication is, and "Schwarzchild Radius" is a fascinating whole-language addition to the physics curriculum. "Even the Queen," however, is the indispensable selection. The author's introductions to each piece are a lovely bonus.

Eleven short stories by one of sf's most exciting new voices explores topics that range from Shakespeare to feminism to quantum physics. Most of these stories have only seen magazine publication.

Masterful short stories
By Glen Engel Cox
A collection of stories by Connie Willis, one of the modern masters of the science fiction short.
"The Last of the Winnebagos" -- I remember reading this story years ago and not caring for it that much. Rereadiug it ten years later, I find it much more appealing. In one sense it is a mystery story; in another it is a cautionary tale. The way that Willis weaves together the two-- the tale of the dead dog and the new, authoritarian society--is fresh and clever. Sentimental? Yes. But in the best way.
"Even the Queen" -- One of my favorite stories, not just because it flirts with taboo, but because it is written with such an easy and joyous manner. Willis' comic stories are like those by Wodehouse--she is never content with a single gag, but can mix in wordplay, pop references, slapstick, and play off the old cliches in new and unpredictable ways.
"Schwarzchild Radius" -- Just so as you don't get the impression that I worship the paper that Willis types upon, I will gladly admit that I don't care for this particular story. I believe that this was one of the first stories in which she portrays a physics concept in characters and setting. Later on, in "Blued Moon" and "At the Rialto," the same method, when used with comedy, works to much better effect.
"Ado" -- One of the comedies that has not aged well, due partly to the backlash against "Political Correctness" of which this story was only a small part. There are parts that are still funny, like the running battle between the teacher and the sun worshipping student fought with Bible versus, but the end less litany of offended organizations goes stale about halfway through.
"Spice Pogrom" -- This is the kind of comedy that will never die; well, at least I hope it won't, because, like Willis, I am enamoured of the screwball as nothing else. Yes, it may seem as formulaic as any pulp adventure, but it has at its core some thing that no mere adventure story has, and that is a true sense of romance. We may want to be the Lone Ranger, but we know in our hearts that we can not ride Silver. On the other hand, with a little wit and luck, we are able to be romantic and silly--it is closer to us.
"Winter's Tale" -- One of the reasons Will is appeals to me so is that I share so many of her interests--screwballs, Wodehouse, and Shakespeare. Here the scholar in Willis truly shows, similar to her wonderful novel Doomsday Book. A great story and a history lesson--what more can you ask for?
"Chance" -- This is as close to a mainstream tale as you will ever see in a genre publication (it first appeared in Asimov's) but it is the kind of story that is popping up with more regularity in small-press literary and mainstream magazines.
"In the Late Cretacious" -- This is another one that did not age too well. Basically, it tries to put a comparison between academic competition and the evolution of dinosaurs, along with a running joke on parking. Bits are funny, but the whole is tired.
"Time Out" -- Another one in a similar vein, although in the end it feels more like "Space Pogrom" then "Ado." The comedy is present, but more organic--not relying so much on repetition, as it does character. And, while it is a story about time travel, it is also, and more importantly, a story about time.
"Jack" -- Another war story, but one that I was able to relate to. Loosely related to Dracula, this has some interesting points about war and its effect on people. Much more subtle than normal Willis fare.
"At the Rialto" -- I like this story. Of course I do--I'm a sucker for quantum physics--but even I have problems following the pattern and ideas here. In this case, Willis worked hard on her research. At least you can read it without understanding everything.
A very good collection on the whole, and definitely worth your time.

Kleenex required
By A Customer
God, "The last of the Winnebagos" has to be the saddest story ever written. I hardly ever cry when I read books; during this one, I *wept*. I had to go shut myself in another room because it was embarassing in front of my family. If you undertake to read this, make sure you have ample privacy, a box of Kleenex, and your dog right beside you.
As to the other stories--Even the Queen is hilarious, and Ado is frighteningly possible. There's plenty here. I'm not going to discuss the rest of it 'cause I'm off to buy Connie Willis' other books!

*Impossible Things* showcases Willis's unique voice
By Scrivenera
In the introduction to her Hugo-award winning story "Even the Queen," Connie Willis condemns "literary demagoguery," arguing "[Shakespeare] wrote about Human Issues--fear and ambition and guilt and regret and love--the issues that trouble and delight all of us, women included. And the only ones I want to write about." In this second collection of her short fiction, she succeeds admirably in her objective.

Willis is gifted with one of the most original voices in science fiction, one that captures the elusive rhythms of screwball comedy (as in "Even the Queen" and "Spice Pogrom"), then just as deftly evokes melancholy or tragedy ("A Winter's Tale," "Chance"). And who but Willis would even attempt to write a story dealing simultaneously with evolution, academia, and parking tickets ("In the Late Cretaceous")? My favorite story in this compilation might be "Time Out," in which a down-to-earth housewife finds herself unexpectedly snared in a secret time-travel experiment, with hilarious results. Willis's light touch is one of her best assets in a genre that can often be overwhelmingly bleak and nihilistic. The humor can sometimes be a little too glib (as in "Ado," which deals with political correctness run amok in a high school English class), but, on the whole, the tone of *Impossible Things* is well-balanced between the comic and the tragic. Best of all, Willis has remembered one of the most important lessons in science fiction--that the distance between "possible" and "impossible" can be measured by a single phrase: What If?

There are some interesting points, but the book comes off as being a little too libral and making points and showing the facts that it wants. There were facts left out that intelligent readers should know were omitted that contradict certain findings.
Sometimes the percentages and straight numbers were overkill to read.
There were some very good and interesting points taken from other countries with solutions that were innovative, although the book seemed to determine that these were the 'correct' solutions and failed to factor in major differences in the societies and legal factors.
There were good points and interesting reads, but the half-truths and seemingly purposely omitted information seemed to look for an uncrittical audience to persuade the reader to the left. I feel that addressing the information that was not presented would have made the book more neutral and seem less bias.

Amazon.com Review
Out of Africa is Karin Blixen's love letter to the country she called home for nearly 20 years. Arriving in British East Africa (now Kenya) from Denmark in 1914, Blixen--Isak Dinesen was her pen name--was immediately seduced by the landscape of the Ngong hill country, not to mention the animals and people who inhabited it. Her descriptions bring this wonderland alive for readers: out on safari, she recalls the movements of a group of giraffes, "in their queer, inimitable, vegetative gracefulness, as if it were not a herd of animals but a family of rare, long-stemmed, speckled gigantic flowers slowly advancing." Blixen laces into her reverie the account of her coffee plantation--which ultimately succumbed to high altitude, droughts, and tumbling international coffee prices--and tales of her friendships with other colonials in Nairobi. But one should read her memoir for the stories she tells of cooking with her Kikuyu chef (who almost never ate any of the European delicacies he so expertly created), adopting an abandoned infant antelope, flying over the countryside in her lover's plane--"the greatest, most transporting pleasure of my life on the farm"--and watching the children of her tenant farmers collect at her house each day at noon for the spectacle of her cuckoo clock.

Though some of her references to native Africans will likely make today's readers uncomfortable, Blixen can also be perceptive, particularly in her articulation of the differences between European and African culture and her excitement over what she learns from "her" Africans. It is not long before she is attuned to the rhythms of nature: she can foresee when the rains will come, can spot the new moon before anyone else on the farm, and knows exactly what the silence of night should sound like. Though her sorrow is almost unbearably palpable when at last--after the collapse of the farm, the loss of her lover, and the war looming--Blixen leaves Africa, the reader will close the book richer for her sojourn. --Jordana Moskowitz

From the Inside Flap
With classic simplicity and a painter's feeling for atmosphere and detail, Isak Dinesen tells of the years she spent from 1914 to 1931 managing a coffee plantation in Kenya.

About the Author
Karen von Blixen-Finecke, also known by her nom de plume, Isak Dinesen, was born in Denmark in 1885. Dinesen is widely known for her 1937 memoir, Out of Africa, which was later adapted into an Academy Award-winning film starring Meryl Streep. Dinesen spent much of her early life at her mother s estate in Horsens, but was no stranger to travelling, as she studied art in Rome, Paris, and Copenhagen. In 1914, Dinesen and her fianc?e, Baron Bror von Blixen-Finecke, moved to Kenya to manage a coffee plantation. After divorcing in 1925, Dinesen lived briefly with the aristocratic big-game hunter Denys Finch-Hatton, who led safaris for wealthy visitors. After his death and the shutdown of the coffee plantation due to a global economic decline, Dinesen returned to Denmark and immersed herself in her writing, publishing Out of Africa shortly after. Dinesen died in 1962.

Here I am, where I ought to be.
By Christopher Nelson
I'm another reader who comes to Out of Africa by way of Holden Caulfield in Catcher in the Rye; and it became recommended reading before I visited Kenya for myself in the early 90's. So, having just finished it and now half way through Shadows on the Grass, my overall impression is a pleasant one. I enjoyed Dinesen's writing style very much, and would agree with many readers that Out of Africa deserves a place among the classics in English literature. It's Karen Blixen's memoirs of her time in Kenya around WWI, living and working on her coffee plantation near Nairobi. Her descriptions of the Natives, her European friends, the land, the animals, flora and fauna are incredible. The chapters shift back and forth in time, some focused on specific events and individuals, some more whimsical and anecdotal. Reading Out of Africa transports the reader into early 20th Centrury colonial Kenya, and more concretely, onto Ms. Blixen's farm at the foot of the Ngong Hills. Years later she takes up her time in Africa again in Shadows on the Grass, talking more about her loyal Somali servant & right-hand man, Farah, taking a more philosophical tone regarding "masters & slaves", Native superstitions, manners, and so on. Shadows is inferior in many ways to Out of Africa, and it feels more like an "addendum" to the main work, which is poetry by comparison. By the time she writes it, she seems to have grown slightly more distant, and well, Colonist European.

As for Out of Africa, if you've seen the movie version and are looking for it here you're in for a surprise because the book contains no overt romance between Karen & Denys, nor mention of siphylous, nor much in the way of Karen's own personal life. Her ex-husband, Bror is almost non-existant. That makes sense seeing that she wrote under a pseudonym for whatever reaons. Still, I was slightly disappointed not to find more personal thoughts or emotions from her, or discussions regarding the politcal, historical, or economic backdrop of Kenya. Or the workings of the coffee business there. (I have yet to read it, but from what I gather "Uhuru" by Robert Ruark is an excellent novel dealing with these types of affairs in Kenya in the next generations after Blixen, in the 1950's & 1960's). Also, Blixen is very much a product of the times and her colonial attitudes and mindset sometimes come across as condescending or negative towards the Africans (mostly in certain passages in Shadows though). However, I do believe that in her frequent comparisons between the animals, land, and Natives Blixen is actually praising and admiring the people, not being racist or mean, as one reviewer here claims. She frequently praises the Kikuyus, Masai, and Somali she lives with for their numerous attributes (as well as the European settlers) and for their simplicity and harmony with nature, versus the repressed and "civilized" Europe she comes from. One other thing that's different from the movie is her attitude towards hunting. In the movie it's as though she doesn't hunt at all, but in the book she specifically mentions her intitial desire to shoot one of every kind of local game (though she does later express some distaste for hunting, she remains enthusiastic about shooting lions, comparing it in Shadows to "a declaration of love" and hunting to being a sort of "love-affair"). She means respect, but oh how the times have changed now with all the big game enthusiasts shooting game with . . . cameras from pop-top mini-vans!

Once I let go of the movie (its own masterpiece of beauty & cinematography) and my intellectual curiosities, and came to accept Blixen's memoir as it is, I enjoyed it more and more as I read on. I took my time reading it, savoring it, and reflecting upon my own safari experience (with a camera) in Kenya not too many years ago, and found much to admire and contemplate in her writings, even if from a different era. While Out of Africa isn't especially deep or philosphical, nor dramatic or emotional, it somehow comes across as a grand novel, and there are moments when all of the above hit you. This is due primarily, I think, to Blixen's having lived a fascinating life in a unique period and place, and knowing how to tell a story without overdoing it - she just writes her own experiences. One good example of this balance can be found in one of my favorite chapters entitled, "A Fugitive Rests on the Farm" from Part III. In it, a Swedish immigrant and traveler named Emmanuelson stays briefly on Karen's farm, discusses his lonely and peripatetic life with her, and eventually walks off into the Masai reserve all alone, putting his fate into God & the Masai's hands. The sparse detail and images are great. Likewise, her rememberances with Denys Fitch-Hatton are wonderfuly scenic and memorable as well, and subtly romantic. All the vignettes she relates are mostly undramatic, straight-forward, and though unforgettable. Out of Africa is a unique literary memoir and journal of a diverse group of people come together in one specific place and time, bonded together by the very soil in which the coffee trees they lived for were once planted, and live on in these organic pages.

luminous and magical as the African moon over her farm
By Karen Sampson Hudson
Isak Dinesen (Karen Blixen) has been elevated to star status by the feminists for her independent stance and courage, but don't read this book because of that. Don't look for the tragic story of her misguided marriage and the heartbreak and barrenness it brought her, or for descriptions of her love affair with adventurer Denys Finch-Hatton. None of that appears here.
Instead, "Out of Africa" is a storytelling book woven in the imaginative Danish style. Dinesen's finely tuned sensitivity is revealed here, as well as her (again typically Danish) well-developed gift for friendship with many kinds of people. In her case this gift extends to African animals as well, like Lulu, the beautiful gazelle who graced her plantation for years.

Her descriptions of the Kenya of her day are exquisitely written, factual and magical at the same time. Africa is the star of the book, not Dinesen herself, not the tribespeople or the colonials, not her struggles with raising coffee in land "a little too high", nor her political dealings with the government officials. Her writing evokes the Africa she knew well and loved deeply.

She loved Africa -the people, the place and the way of life
By Linda Linguvic
Writing under the pen name of Isak Dinessen, "Out of Africa", published in 1937, was written by Karen Blixen who lived in Kenya from 1914 to 1931. She was from Denmark and had come to Kenya to marry her Swedish cousin, but even though the marriage didn't work out, she stayed on their 4,000 acre coffee farm. In loving detail she describes her way of life, including some extensive descriptions of incidents involving her native servants. Through it all her love for the people and for Africa shines though. The reader lives her adventures with her and shares her regrets when the farm fails and she has return to Europe. "Shadows on the Grass", published in 1960 is a much shorter work and describes her relationships with some of her African friends in the years after she had to leave. Together these two books form the story of her world and stand today as both a literary and historical document to the times.
Ms. Dinessen used her words well. I particularly loved her characterizations of the native people who touched her life. . She had no medical training with the exception of a first-aid course and yet she doctored to the many people who worked for her. She was also a fine huntswoman, good with a gun. There were seasons of drought on the farm as well as attacks by grasshoppers and she wrote about all of this. Often her European friends stayed at her home, bringing food delicacies and wine. One of the men died horribly in a plane crash and her description of his funeral and his burial was most moving.
Perhaps some of her views on the differences between Europeans and the natives as well as the way she casually killed animals might not be considered politically correct today. And it was never clear to me if the man who died was her lover or not. She also makes not one reference to her failed marriage; I learned about that in the preface written by others. The central theme of this memoir is one of love, of a deep love for a people and a place and a way of life. I understand that the farm she lived on has become a shopping mall today. But we are all indeed fortunate to have her beautiful writings that bring us back to a time and place that is no more. Her words live on. And I thank her for them. Highly recommended.
