Hellraisers, by Robert Sellers

Raise a glass to the story of four of the greatest actors—and boozers—of all time: Richard Burton, Richard Harris, Peter O’Toole, and Oliver Reed. This inventive graphic work seamlessly weaves their four biographies into one fast-paced adventure of drunken binges, orgies, parties, and fun. The story begins at a London pub one sorry Christmas and is told through the eyes of Martin, a wannabe hellraiser sitting at the end of the bar alone, drinking himself into oblivion. He’s joined in turn by Burton, Harris, Reed, and O’Toole, who take Martin on tours of their tumultuous childhoods, rises to stardom, and chaotic personal lives.

Hellraisers:

“A savage sock in the jaw to polite, reverential biographical graphic novels, these hilariously bleak shock tales make the modern-day antics of Lindsay Lohan look like Dr. Seuss.” —Publishers Weekly

“In the hands of less talented creators, this book would be a boring mess. But it’s the exact opposite.” —Boing Boing

Famous lives reduced to a Victorian morality play.
By B. Richardson
This was an interesting idea: turn a biography of four of the world's most famous actors/infamous drunks into a graphic novel. The art is quite good as is the story-telling. Where it fails is that instead of just telling the tale of four of the most brilliant, charismatic, and yet tragically flawed actors of any generation, it shoehorns their story into a clunky plot frame. Said fame being the plight of an abusive alcoholic who is set straight after being visited by their ghosts. Yes, it's "A Christmas Carol" with Richard Burton, Peter O'Toole, Richard Harris, and Oliver Reed serving as the Ghosts of Benders Past. The only reason I can see for this plot device existing is someone wanted to make sure the audience was made well aware that over-drinking was bad. As if the simple truth of the lives of Burton, O'Toole, Harris, and Reed wasn't warning enough.

Four Spirits, Five Stars!
By ja6438
For a fan of Robert Seller's "Hellraisers" series, this Graphic Bio is a gem. Only here can we see events that we could only imagine before. The biographical structure of the original Hellraisers novel, which documented the most outrageous anecdotes of actors Burton, Harris, O'Toole, and Reed, has been cleverly woven into a "Christmas Carol" narrative, in which a young man named Martin is drinking himself into oblivion on Christmas. Martin is visited by his dead father (who had dug himself a grave with drink and smokes), and is warned that he will be visited in the night by four spirits (pun intended).

One by one, the four actors walk Martin through most of the anecdotes we were given in Seller's first Hellraisers book, and the artwork by Jake is fantastic. My favorite of the stories was that of Oliver Reed, as the artwork flows humorously without too much cluttered dialogue. After all, the stories in Sellers books are quite visual, so it makes sense that we see them drawn literally.

My only gripe with the book is that it does not capture every anecdote that the biography does; obviously it would be difficult to work every one into the narrative, so I don't deduct any stars for this, but I found myself craving more after burning through the Graphic Bio in one short sitting. For fans of the Hellraisers books, however, this is a must have.

Now, if only this could somehow be adapted for the screen. A film would be marvelous, but I'd settle for an animated short, TV show, or hell, even a motion comic...

Excellant adaption of the Seller's original book
By Urban
This is a great adaption of an already fascinating book. I was a little nervous I wouldn't get anything new out of this that I hadn't gotten from the original but the presentation and context of a christmas carol interpretation gives an fascinating angle to the story of these complex men. HIghly recommended even if you've read the original work.
Also appreciate the artwork which captures all four of these remarkable people and draws out their flaws and accomplishments admirably.
