Prehistoric Art: The Symbolic Journey of Humankind, by Randall White

While some prehistoric sites - notably the painted caves at Lascaux in France and at Altamira in northern Spain - are familiar, many more such places are almost unknown. In fact, remains left by prehistoric men and women are far more numerous and have been found over a much greater territory - including Eurasia, Africa, Australia and the Americas - than most people are aware. These remains include paintings and engravings in caves and rock shelters, but also decorated tools, weapons, statuettes, personal ornaments and even musical instruments made of stone, ivory, antler, shell, bone and fired clay. In "Prehistoric Art", anthropologist Randall White presents a global survey, starting with the first explosion of imagery that occurred approximately 40,000 years ago but also including the creations of essentially "prehistoric" peoples living as recently as the early 20th century. Drawing on up-to-date research, White places these discoveries in context and discusses possible uses and meanings for the objects and images.

From Publishers Weekly
With academic subheadings like "Powers of Observation and the Space-Time Continuum," this is a comprehensive overview of prehistoric art, not a casual coffee-table book. White, director of the nonprofit Institute for Ice Age Studies, is a New York University anthropologist, and he offers a history of global excavations, the art and the peoples who made it, while also exploring the meanings of the symbols and the social system in which they were crafted. One of his stated goals with this effort is to "illustrate how a modern Western notion of `art' impedes an understanding of the emergence and adaptive value of the earliest representations in any given region." But 226 full-color illustrations give plenty of opportunity for simply marveling: a pointillist bison; face-to-face woolly mammoths in simple black lines; a 26,000-year-old ivory carving of a human skull. The result is a book that provides a journey as real as it is symbolic, demonstrating the evolutionary power of imagery.

From Scientific American
About 40,000 years ago the first Homo sapiens--the Cro-Magnons--began to trickle into Europe, displacing the resident Neanderthals in the process. The contrast between the records of their lives that these very different hominids left behind could hardly be more striking. For no extinct human species, not even the large-brained Homo neanderthalensis, has bequeathed us evidence of a complex symbolic existence, based on the extraordinary cognitive capacities that distinguish us from all other living species today. In contrast, the lives of the Cro-Magnons were drenched in symbolism. Well over 30,000 years ago these early people were creating astonishing art on the walls of caves. They crafted subtle and beautiful carvings and engravings and kept records by incising intricate notations on bone plaques. They made music on bone flutes, and if they did this, they surely sang and danced as well. They ornamented their bodies and buried their dead with elaborate grave goods, presumably to serve them in an afterlife. Technologically, a cascade of innovations included nets, textiles and ropes, even the first ceramics. In short, those Cro-Magnons were us: members of a species whose relationship with the rest of the world was totally unprecedented in the entire history of life. For a couple of decades now, New York University archaeologist Randy White has been a leading investigator of how the expression of the unique human capacity unfolded in Europe during the two dozen millennia that followed the arrival of the Cro-Magnons. In this thoughtful and very beautiful book, White concentrates on the most dazzling part of this record, the part that embraces what we would call art--and that includes some of the most powerful ever made. But he is careful to point out that "art" is very much a Western concept and that for its creators, what looks to us like art probably had implications vastly different from those we impute in our own society to art and decoration. For while nobody could doubt that Cro-Magnon symbolic production somehow reflected these people's conceptions of their place in the natural world, the Cro-Magnons were hunters and gatherers, with a perceived relationship to nature that must have been radically different from our own. For this reason, White eschews the elaborate explanations that so many authors feel somehow obliged to bring to the interpretation of prehistoric art and hews to the facts. He begins with a brief history of the discovery and interpretation of Cro-Magnon art, as prelude to a largely chronological account of the evidence for symbolic expression in Europe and parts of northern Asia between about 40,000 and 10,000 years ago. In these sections, White mostly avoids stylistic analysis in favor of a focus on techniques, but he manages to address, if usually briefly, most of the major questions that Cro-Magnon art elicits. As perhaps befits a work that grew out of a university survey course, this volume extends beyond mainly European Ice Age art to consider prehistoric symbolic and representational traditions (some earlier, others quite recent) in Africa, southern and western Asia, Australia, and the Americas. Each of these regional groupings is treated separately, and White wisely refrains from drawing close parallels between different regional traditions. Of course, including all these diverse traditions between the covers of a single book might be taken to imply a unity that contradicts White's insistence on the unique cultural roots and referents of each one of them. But the fact that all are the products of hunting-gathering peoples serves very usefully to remind us of the vast range of iconographies and aesthetics available even to noncomplex human societies. What White's spectacularly illustrated book does most clearly, then, is to bring home the astonishing diversity and intricacy of the representational traditions that the extraordinary human symbolic spirit has from the beginning produced worldwide, even in the absence of complex social and economic structures. The remarkable human cognitive capacity that early art reflects appeared quite recently, perhaps less than 100,000 years ago. And that appearance set our species on a course of accelerating technological change and elaboration that may yet run out of our control. But White shows that although our economic lives have changed out of recognition in that time, the potential that underwrites our modern lifestyles and achievements was there from the very start. Deep down, human beings haven't changed one whit since prehistoric times.

All the pretty horses . . . and bison and lions and bears and . . .
By Stephen A. Haines
Sometime around forty thousand years ago, our ancestors began to view Nature from a new perspective. Although Homo sapiens and its ancestors knew Nature well in order to survive, a different visual outlook was in the making. Hunting or scavenging prey or dodging predators kept people aware of other animals. As physical changes made speech possible, there must have been some exchange of observations and ideas. With the new outlook, however, came a change in expression. Graphic images, especially those of large and powerful creatures surrounding them, were painted on rock walls. Those images and the models incorporated into tools and weapons, could be seen by all and became part of the society. Since their first known discovery in 1575, but chiefly in the 19th and 20th centuries, a great deal of interpretation and debate has occurred over their antiquity, what prompted their creation, and what they "mean". White, in this superb global survey of "art before writing", dismisses most of the theories, while placing the artworks in their likely social setting.

Even if the author failed to provide new insights into what prehistoric art might convey, the illustrations make this book something special. The images in this collection make it an outstanding example of the new wave of such studies. While there are books on Altamira, Lascaux, Chauvet and other locations, few, if any, offer the comprehensive prospect of so many sites. White devotes chapters to such scattered locations as Siberia, Anatolia, South Asia and the Americas. Each region has its own varieties of art, spanning a particular time-line and incorporating many traditions.

One point White reiterates often is his dismissal of art being "an invention of European civilization". This racist cavil has persisted even among serious scholars until very recently. Although most of the rock and cave art found has been in Western Europe, White notes how "art" in other places predates those creations. Even in Africa, the continent of our origins, South Africa alone holds over thirty thousand "rock or cave art" examples alone. The lack of resources for cataloging and analysing them is shameful. Australia and Africa alike have symbols and images from long before even the outstanding Chauvet and Lascaux depictions were daubed on the cave walls. The scattering of paintings, carvings, and objects from various times and places indicates the diversity of cultures making them.

This diversity leads to another theme White wants dismissed: prehistoric art reflects many ways of thinking and imagining. "Prehistoric" doesn't translate to "primitive" and there is no "universal" style underpinning of the works. More to the point, is how we tend to view the term "art". Our recent history has associated art with hierarchical societies containing a leisure class that could create or promote "art" as a purely creative process. White argues this narrow view obscures the more likely reasons the art was produced. The images would have been highly significant to both artists and viewers. Nature, he contends, was being reconfigured. While the implications of that mental leap remain debateable, the long-term consequences are still with us. The language may have academic tones, but the clarity of the message is not obscured. We need to understand our ancestors far better than we do. The implications for the future are significant. compared to "Journey through the Ice Age"
By Wyote
I wasn't sure whether this book or "Journey Through the Ice Age" by Paul G. Bahn would be better, so I bought them both.

It turns out that they are both excellent books. Both are loaded with color photographs of artifacts famous and less well-known. Both have scholarly, informative text, considering anthropological and historical contexts, the techniques and materials used by the artists, the history of the study of prehistoric art, and plenty of cautious speculation about the functions the art had to its artists' communities.

They are organized quite differently: Bahn's moves from topic to topic: chapter 7 is on portable art, chapter 8 on rock shelters and cave art, chapter 9 on outdoors art, and so on. But White's book has a regional arrangement: chapter 4 is on Western Europe, chapter 5 is on Central and Eastern Europe and Sibera, chapter 6 is on Africa, the Near East and Anatolia, and so on.

Obviously you can see that White's book has more of a global focus than Bahn's. In fact, Bahn's third chapter deals with prehistoric art outside of Europe; in every other chapter he focuses on European art, especially the caves.

Although Bahn's book devotes a chapter to "Portable Art" such as jewelry and miniature statues (including the famous "Venus figurines"), White's book has a far superior coverage. On the other hand, Bahn has better coverage of interesting issues such as how to reproduce prehistoric art for public enjoyment, dating issues, and forgeries.

If you are primarily interested in European cave art and will be content with a glance at the rest of the world, then Bahn's book is better for you. Personally, although Bahn deals with some interesting issues that White neglects, ultimately I prefer White's global perspective; further, I appreciate his introductory comments about modern Western art and cultural assumptions, and consideration of what might be universal in human art.

Incidently, when it comes to books about art, for some reason I prefer hardcover to paperback; and at this time White's book in hardcover is available at great discount on Amazon, making it almost as inexpensive as Bahn's.

So, my preference is clear. However, I want to emphasize that despite my partiality to White's book, they are certainly both excellent, and I do not think one of them is clearly, inherently better than the other. It just depends on what you are looking for.

This is a good series....I can't wait to see what happens next with Pepper and Dmitri.
By Sharon S
Strife (Books 1-3) by Sky Corgan
Designation: Parts 1-3 in a 7 part multi-book series….ends with a cliffhanger

So while I really like Sky Corgan’s style of storytelling once we get the whole story, it can be so frustrating when it ends in a cliffhanger, but at least in this case the whole series is completed and you don’t have to wait to get the rest of the story. This is actually a pretty short book at about 131 pages.

Book One: Pepper Kimbrough is in quite the predicament….she came to Hollywood to fulfill her dream of becoming an actress, but that hasn’t happened so she needs to get a job so she can go back to school since she has no family to help her. So she is trying to get a job as a high paid escort to keep a roof over her head and pay for college. She is just doing what she has to do to survive. On her first night she ends up leaving with a guy called Brodie Grant and although there is an attraction and had they met on a real date maybe something would have happened, these circumstances create a wall between them.

Book Two: Pepper/Alexis ended up spending the night with Brodie/Dmitri, but they don’t have sex. So her first night as an escort is not so bad, but she feels like she really didn’t do her job….not that she really wants to do the job to begin with. But she feels like a failure since he didn’t want her. Dmitri is in town to film a movie and really is interested in his co-star, Marie Overton, but when he thinks he will meet her, she doesn’t show and so he decides to spend another night with Alexis/Pepper.

Book Three: Dmitri knows that he cannot be seen with her since it could destroy his career, but at the same time he can’t not see her. Dmitri realizes he wants her even though she is paid to be there and if not for that she of course would be there since he is famous. When he finally admits this to her, it sends her over the edge again. She hides in the bathroom for an hour debating how she wants him, but it wasn’t the right time, but that is her job and she doesn’t get to pick the right time anymore. Again they don’t have sex.

I actually enjoyed the way this story played out. There were plenty of times that I wanted to yell at the characters. It seemed like just when things were going to work out they over thought things and put up walls. Of course Sky leaves us with a doozy of a cliffhanger and gosh darn it I’m going to have to get the rest of the series ASAP.

DELICIOUSLY DARK AND DELIGHTFULLY WICKED !!!
By jlswainsboro/Judy Lewis
Title: Strife
Designation: Compilation of the first three books of a multi-Installment Serial, Not A Standalone, Does include Cliffhangers
Author: Sky Corgan
My Rating: FIVE DELIGHTFULLY WICKED STARS *****
Sky Corgan is an exceptionally talented storyteller and one of my preferred go-to authors and her now completed Strife series is one of all-time favorite reads. I read this series as it was originally released, in installments, but Corgan has conveniently combined the first three installments of the seven part serial into one affordable set for your reading pleasure. This is a deliciously dark and enticingly provocative story which will hold you completely enthralled from beginning to end. I would very much like to share my reviews with you.
Yowza! Sky Corgan has gone and done it again! And just what has she done, you ask? She's dazzled her readers with yet another deliciously dark tale of hardship, angst and unexpected love. Sky Corgan is a master of her trade and knows exactly how to tease, tantalize and titillate her reader for maximum effect in order to create a wonderfully entertaining experience. Strife is an extremely well written dark and compelling romance with complex characters but what is most surprising in this story is the underlying element of humor which I find that I very much enjoy. The story is told in the first person by the two primary characters, Pepper Kimbrough and Dmitri Strife, with alternating his and her points of view by chapter which just happens to be my favorite style of storytelling. Although the story is classified as a dark romance, it's anything but gloomy. It's exciting, fast-paced, appealing, realistic, romantic and seductive. The characters as always shine brightly in Sky Corgan's work and these are no exception. They are fascinating, captivating, engaging, relatable, sexy as sin and sometimes quite humorous. Corgan skillfully combines these elements into an enticing and divinely entertaining experience for her readers.
Book One: Pepper Kimbrough came to Hollywood to fulfill her dream of becoming an actress. That was Plan A. Unfortunately, Plan A hasn't worked out so well. Of course, neither has her life but she's managed to survive, albeit by the skin of her teeth. She may not be innocent and vulnerable but she's definitely desperate. And hence, her current predicament - down on her knees with her head in James Sumner's lap with her mouth on his.... well, you know where her mouth is. Yep, this is now her life and this is what loosely passes for a somewhat questionable interview for a job - or at least she hopes. No, life certainly isn't beautiful, not for people like her - at least not yet. Sometimes, it's as ugly as your own worst nightmares and this is definitely one of those times. The only question: Is Pepper strong enough to survive it??? The memories of her past say no but her determination and inner strength say yes. Now it's time for Plan B: Please this jerkwad Sumner, get the job as a call girl making $500.00 an hour, save her money, go to college, then become rich and famous. But is she really willing to sell her body as well as her soul to accomplish her dream and yet somehow, still hang on to her sanity? Or ultimately risk her sanity to fulfill her dream? She's been through worse and it's not forever, right? Right!? She can do this and stay sane; she could be a escort/call girl, couldn't she? It's actually rather ironic since she had actually grown up rich and now she's only one breath away from homeless and starving. This is all worth it, isn't it? With only $9.03 left to her name, it has to be. She no longer has a choice. Or does she???
Rock Star Dmitri Strife has conquered the musical stage and now he's ready to conquer the big screen stage in Hollywood with his first starring role as Brodie Grant in the upcoming new movie, Master of Payback. He's just arrived and it's his first night in "tinsel town". His friend John is surprising him with a night on the town and it does turn out to be quite the shock. Instead of going to a club, John is taking him to a private brothel with beautiful babes galore, all willing to submit to his every desire. Oh my! But Dmitri has had his fill of endless nights of booze, never ending parties and meaningless sex with women always looking to use him as a means for fame and fortune. He doesn't wanted to be caught up in that nightmare again and almost leaves - until he sees her - the beautiful, blonde that wanders onto the balcony where he's hidden in the shadows. She looks so innocent and so sad. He can't help himself; he needs to know her name. But surprisingly when he approaches her, she doesn't seem to recognize him. He just won't tell her who he really is so he tells her his name is Brodie Grant, the name of his movie character, instead. This night may work out after all. Hmmm.... I wonder?????
Book Two:
Pepper, who has been given the moniker of Alexis by her boss James Sumner, spent her first night as an escort talking with Brodie/Dmitri and NOT having sex. Huh? Nope, no sex. During their night together, Pepper/Alexis confesses to Dmitri/Brodie that she was adopted but the day after graduating from high school, her parents kicked her out with only $700 and said they never wanted to see her again. What the heck? Pepper feels like a complete failure after not being able to seduce Dmitri/Brodie and begins to have serious doubts as to whether she can actually continue this job but unfortunately she's out of options so it's this or starve. But Pepper soon realizes that she may be in way over her head. Thirty five year old Dmitri Strife is very much looking forward to meeting his co-star, Marie Overton. It has long been his dream to meet and woo the beautiful sophisticated movie star and knows this is the perfect opportunity. Apparently she doesn't feel the same since she didn't even bother to show up for the cast luncheon so there will be no date tonight with Marie Overton. So, what's a handsome, successful heartthrob to do??? Request another night with Alexis/Pepper, of course!!! Oh my! And still, no sex! But strangely, Dmitri finds that he enjoys being with Alexis/Pepper and is drawn to beauty and her innocence and is somewhat puzzled by his feelings toward Alexis. He knows an association with her could be dangerous for his career but he can't seem to stop himself. He convinces himself that it's just the easy camaraderie he experiences with Alexis and nothing more.
Book Three:
Dmitri has started filming and finally meets his co-star but at first, Marie seems mildly interested in him. She leaves before he can ask her out. But is he still interested in her? Or would he rather spend time with Pepper? Hmm...Is his interest due to sympathy for Pepper's plight or possibly or is it real friendship he feels for the lovely young Pepper? Or could it be something more??? But the feelings Pepper/Alexis feel for Dmitri are far from friendly. Pepper/Alexis enjoys her time spent with Dmitri and more than a little attracted to him. She hopes to see him again and a small thread of hope is born that maybe, he may just feel something for her other than physical desire. James informs her that Dmitri has indeed requested her company again for the night. I wonder if Pepper/Alexis will be able to seduce Dmitri this time??? And yes, Pepper/Alexis now knows that Brodie lied to her about his identity and is really Dmitri Strife! Oh my goodness! No spoilers from me but I will say this...Beautiful young woman who came to Hollywood to fulfill her dream of becoming an actress but has fallen on hard times and is now broke and almost homeless-check! Handsome rock star who is tired of his life as a famous musician and has come to Hollywood for his first starring role in a movie-check! An unexpected meeting of two lost souls-check! Heated attraction, a little heartbreaking angst and hopefully a sweet romance-we'll see! That and a whole lot more! Fabulous entertainment and an awesome read!

Strife 1,2, and 3
By unicorn64
This is an ARC book given to me for my honest review. The story of Dimitri Stife also known as Brodie and Pepper Kimbrogh or Alexis. Pepper has had a bad life and thinks maybe as an Escort she can make enough money to improve her life but the first thing she has to do is give a blow job to the owner of the escort service. She find this distasteful but realizes that as an escort she will have to do it. Dimitri Strife is a rock star and is looking to make a movie. He wants to meet Marie Overton the star and make her his wife. He also thinks an alliance with her will help his career. So when his friend takes him to a house for an orgy he isn't interested. Then he meets Pepper on the balcony and somehow figures she is new to being an escort and is afraid. He takes her to his hotel and they just talk but she begins to like him. Each part takes about an hour to read and we can read both Dimitri and Alexa's mind. Each part slowly works up to her feelings growing and his as well. But he still has the dream of making Marie his wife. He is trying to be good and stay pure for Marie and Pepper is feeling like he doesn't find her attractive because he doesn't do anything.

For some reason Dimitri keeps requesting Pepper and she finds herself drawn to him but he seems to be rejecting her. They do have fun and talk a lot. She tells him a bit of her childhood but he doesn't say too much about himself. She can't even drink a glass of win with him because she is underage. But at his hotel room he mixes her drinks. Still he keeps his distance and it bothers her. Though they do cuddle and she just keeps getting more attracted to him. As usual Sky Corgan has a well written account of what happens between the two. Short easy to read quick books but about a minor entering the escort business. It is a very good series I think but is meant for mature readers over 18.

Useful But Very Basic
By docdiamond
I plan to retire in 3 years, and am desperately trying to understand how to convert my investments into an income stream. This book is very good if you know very little about financial matters, or if you want a very general overview of your options. There is some very good advice in the book. But it is decidedly unsophisticated. Its description of annuity options is adequate, but not very incisive. He does not even mention bond ladders. It just depends on what you are looking for. I am glad that I read the book, and it helped me decide how to structure my retirement income portfolio at a 40,000 foot level. So, start with this book as a point of departure, but do not expect too much out of it.

A superb book if you retire and have no pension, just IRA money
By William Wade Foster
I am retired. I have no pension, but I have assets which I moved from my 401(K) at work into a self-managed rollover IRA. I also have a Roth IRA and a brokerage account. I think my situation is fairly common ........as the old style guaranteed company pensions are much less available today than 401K's and such.

So what is the BEST way for me and others like me to safely generate retirement income for life from these assets. Of all the books I have read (literally dozens) on investing, this book is simply the best guide I have found to help you to turn your accumulated assets into a safe lifetime retirement paycheck.

Before you spend time with hired financial planners, before you "invest" another penny, before this day is over.........order this book by Steve Vernon.

Good info on Annuities
By Builder One
The good reviews on this book were the reason I purchased it. I've read a zillion of these kind of books and this was one of the more helpful ones. Getting unbiased info on annuities, I find, is difficult. Steve uses examples with math to really crystallize some of the options one has. I also liked his math on retiree income figures which were helpful. Good book.

MIFARE and Contactless Cards in Application

RFID technology has conquered many areas in which barcodes, magnetic strips and contact smartcards were used previously. Everyday applications, such as electronic ticketing, access cards, debit cards and electronic identity documents would not be possible without this technology.

MIFARE is the most widely used RFID technology, and this book provides a practical and comprehensive introduction to it. Among other things, the initial chapters cover physical fundamentals, relevant standards, RFID antenna design, security considerations and cryptography.

The complete design of a reader's hardware and software is described in detail. The reader's firmware and the associated PC software support programming using any .NET language.

The specially developed PC program, "Smart Card Magic.NET", is a simple development environment that supports sending commands to a card at the click of a mouse, as well as the ability to create C# scripts. Alternatively, one may follow all of the examples using Visual Studio.

Finally, the major smart card reader API standards are introduced. The focus is on programming contactless smartcards using standard PC/SC readers using C/C++, Java and C#.

Hardware and software RFID
By E van Daalen
Everything I 've always wanted to know about 13,56 MHz RFID from hardware to firmware to software to scripts.
Nearly 500 pages of condensed information: value for money. All software can be downloaded.
The book is centered around a hardware reader from Elektor that you have to buy or build yourself. But without the reader, there is still alot of information on the Mifare cards.

Gifted Grownups: The Mixed Blessings of Extraordinary Potential, by Marylou Kelly Streznewski

What is it like to be smarter than 95% of the people you meet? Fifty-four-year-old Alison says, "They told me I was smart and I cried. I wanted to be sexy, or glamorous!" Jean, 38, laments, "I learned the whole job in six weeks, and now I'm bored."

Gifted Grownups, Marylou Kelly Streznewski's unprecedented, 10-year study of 100 gifted adults, examines how being identified as a "smart kid" early on affects career choices, friendships, and romantic pairings later in life. Why do some talented and gifted people become Mozarts and Einsteins or corporate chieftains, while others drop out of school, struggle to hold down jobs, or turn to self-destructive behavior? What are the signs of giftedness, its pitfalls, and its promise? Marylou Streznewski provides answers to these and other questions, and creates an intriguing picture of what it is like to have an accelerated mind in a slow-moving world.

Traditionally, the gifted were measured in terms of intelligence only, and anyone with an IQ score higher than 130 was automatically grouped in with that misunderstood minority. Recently "giftedness" has been redefined to include qualities like extraordinary creative, leadership, or physical skills. Heightened perception, sensitivity, humor, and the ability to put complex ideas together quickly are also aspects of giftedness. These gifts affect the way talented adults react to their friends, families, jobs, and life challenges. Doing for gifted grownups what the bestselling Driven to Distraction did for adults with attention deficit, Gifted Grownups traces many types of gifted adults, including the high-testing, power-achieving Striver; the popular scholar or athlete Superstar; and the creative intellectual, free-spirit Independent. Here for the first time and in their own words, 100 gifted grownups, from ages 18 to 90, and a variety of family and educational backgrounds, occupations, social classes, and races, count the blessings and tally the costs of a high-powered mind. "Highly informative and interesting."--Alice Miller, author of The Drama of the Gifted Child

"This book was a delight. It affirmed my own experiences and observations. The author makes her study come alive . . . through the voices of real people talking about their experiences. . . . I highly recommend this book.i--Joanne Rand Whitmore, PhD, Professor and Dean College and Graduate School of Education, Kent State University

"Many readers will recognize their own experiences.--Lita Linzer Schwartz, PhD, ABPP Distinguished Professor Emerita, Pennsylvania State University.

"This thoughtful book . . . has taken us one step further in our understanding of how and why some talented individuals realize their potential while others do not."--Dr. Sally M. Reis, Professor of Educational Psychology, The University of Connecticut.

"Gifted Grownups meets a long-awaited need. This book would be of interest, not only to gifted education professionals, but also to parents, teachers in general, and to gifted individuals of all ages.--E. Paul Torrance, Georgia Studies of Creative Behavior, author of Gifted and Talented Children in the Regular Classroom. ISBN 0-471-29580-9

Interesting, if Somewhat "Light" Coverage of Giftedness
By Peter Messerschmidt
I've noticed the reviews here-- editorial and otherwise-- have expressed rather mixed opinions about this book. And, in a sense, the book's subtitle ("The mixed blessings of extraordinary potential") serves to underscore the somewhat mixed blessings of the book, itself.
Did I find this to be an interesting book? Certainly. Did I seriously "get something out of it?" I'm shrugging a bit, at this second question. The author has certainly succeeded in writing a book many gifted people will relate to, simply because they will recognize themselvbes in the pages. But does the mere ability to make people relate to the text make this a *useful* book? Again, I am shrugging a bit, and I find myself saying "Yes, this was interesting, but I am not really that much wiser, so what exactly *was* the point....?" Ultimately, the "usefulness" of the book will depend on what the reader is looking for-- MY perception is that this book is more "descriptive" than "educational."
But back to the book's contents. It is divided into three sections:
Part One establishes what exactly the author *means* by the term "gifted grownup." On the initial plus side, Streznewski avoids the trap of correlating "giftedness" with numerical IQ scores. Instead she attributes giftedness to (a somewhat arbitrary?) 3-5% of the population who have exceptionally perceptive minds, quick thoughts and extraordinary talents. These people are then subcategorized into Strivers, Superstars and Independents. The rest of the section offers a bit of historical background on "defining giftedness," theories on the brains of gifted individuals, as well as an interesting (and fairly accurate) commentary on the way many gifted adults tend to "hide" their giftedness, due to social/environmental pressures.
Part Two traces the impact of giftedness of the life of a person, from birth to adulthood, covering childhood and parenting (along with other family dynamics), schooling and work. I found myself able to relate especially well to the section describing the difficulties many gifted children have while in school.
Part Three focuses on "Gifted Lives," covering such topics as gifted adults and relationships, special issues facing gifted women, and gifted senior citizens. At the end, Streznewski has added a section of resources and recommended reading.
"Gifted Grownups" did an excellent job of providing a large number of "Oh wow! Me too!" moments-- and thus offers nice validation, especially for those Gifted Adults who may feel like "misfits" in the world. Streznewski uses quotes from the many (over 100) gifted adults she interviewed in her research for the book, and many will be able to recognize themselves in these excerpts. Yes, there are indeed others "like you," out there!
But as I finished reading, it all struck me as being somewhat long on opinion and too focused on the fact "that" gifted adults face certain challenges, while too short on scientific research, explanations and "why" those difficulties occur. And it is also long on somewhat self-congratulatory "feel good" vignettes, but short on real-life solutions, help and applications for those Gifted Adults who find life to be a struggle. Finally, I found Streznewski to step somewhat lightly over the psychological issues facing the gifted.
In short: "Mixed blessings." But given how few books are available on Adult Giftedness, it was definitely worth a read. However, not enough "meat" here to warrant a 5-star rating.
Final thoughts: Recommended (7.5 out of 10 possible bookmarks). If you're a Gifted Adult, it'll offer you moments of recognition. More highly recommended for teachers of the gifted, in that it provides insights they might not otherwise have, and certainly recommended for any member of a family that feels "mystified" by a gifted family member.
Thanks for reading!

My jaw is on the floor
By A Customer
This book is an absolute must-read for all of us who grew up as "gifted children", but soon found that the real world did not welcome us with open arms. So many of Ms. Streznewski's observations were frighteningly accurate descriptions of my own life experiences, and the many interviews she conducted made me feel less alone.
I've been meandering through life for over ten years thinking that my high IQ was useful in school, but had little relevance in the professional world. Finally, I am enlightened to the fact that "giftedness" does not end at graduation. Suddenly my spotty job history (I get bored very easily and bosses find my outside-the-box thinking threatening), and difficulty in choosing a long-term career make some sense!
I agree with others who stopped at four stars, because although this book provided me with incredibly valuable information about why I am the way I am, it doesn't offer much insight as to how to better focus my potential. I believe that there is a lot of talent being wasted every day because many extraordinarily gifted, talented people are not accepted by society and the business world. How about a sequel that addresses the challenges unique to gifted adults, and strategies to overcome them?

Wow. What more can I say?
By ChrisJ
From the moment I began reading this book, until I finished it 12 hours later, my jaw hung in amazement. I've never had anyone quantify my life experiences so clearly, and this from a total stranger. I have always been labeled gifted, but all that ever got me was ostracization, and being held to a higher standard. My job history was flaky (I get bored easily), I experimented with drugs, my relationship problems, everything was here, and with an explanation. This book covers all aspects of "giftedness", from the stereotypical "nerds", to the antisocial rebels like myself. This book has truly opened my eyes to areas of my life I was unable or unwilling to look at and deal with. It clearly details how gifted people too often end up on the fringe, just for lack of fitting in. It also deals with how to interact with the gifted people in your life, for stonger relationships, and a valuable resource. Thank you for writing this, Ms. Streznewski. This is the most valuable book I have read all year.

Why Stalin's Soldiers Fought: The Red Army's Military Effectiveness in World War II (Modern War Studies (Hardcover)), by Roger R. Reese

Inept leadership, inefficient campaigning, and enormous losses would seem to spell military disaster. Yet despite these factors, the Soviet Union won its war against Nazi Germany thanks to what Roger Reese calls its "military effectiveness": its ability to put troops in the field even after previous forces had been decimated.

Reese probes the human dimension of the Red Army in World War II through a close analysis of soldiers' experiences and attitudes concerning mobilization, motivation, and morale. In doing so, he illuminates the Soviets' remarkable ability to recruit and retain soldiers, revealing why so many were willing to fight in the service of a repressive regime—and how that service was crucial to the army's military effectiveness. He examines the various forms of voluntarism and motivations to serve-including the influences of patriotism and Soviet ideology-and shows that many fought simply out of loyalty to the idea of historic Russia and hatred for the invading Germans. He also considers the role of political officers within the ranks, the importance of commanders who could inspire their troops, the bonds of allegiance forged within small units, and persistent fears of Stalin's secret police.

Brimming with fresh insights, Reese's study shows how the Red Army's effectiveness in the Great Patriotic War was foreshadowed by its performance in the Winter War against Finland and offers the first direct comparison between the two, delving into specific issues such as casualties, tactics, leadership, morale, and surrender. Reese also presents a new analysis of Soviet troops captured during the early war years and how those captures tapped into Stalin's paranoia over his troops' loyalties. He provides a distinctive look at the motivations and experiences of Soviet women soldiers and their impact on the Red Army's ability to wage war.

Ultimately, Reese puts a human face on the often anonymous Soviet soldiers to show that their patriotism was real, even if not a direct endorsement of the Stalinist system, and had much to do with the Red Army's ability to defeat the most powerful army the world had ever seen.

The best overall source on Red Army motivation
By Reina Pennington
Roger Reese's work is always interesting, accessible, and important. This book contributes a lot to our understanding of the Red Army through the extensive use of recently-published interviews and memoirs, and newly-available archival materials. (The Preface provides an excellent evaluation of sources.) The discussion of primary group theory is particularly valuable, as this subject hasn't received nearly enough attention in Russian military history compared to works on Germany's forces. Reese makes a key contribution in his analysis of the Red Army's catastrophic losses of the first year, which he argues was due to the unique military situation (force ratios, training and doctrine, supply, fatigue) rather than to lack of motivation or will. He also persuasively shows that politics played a minimal role as either as a positive or negative troop motivator. Read firsthand accounts, by all means (as another reviewer has suggested) -- then read this book to place the soldiers' experience of war in a meaningful context.

Well-organized book, with pretty decent analysis on a tough topic to address.
By Mary Hallman
This book provides a serious effort to study why the Soviet Army fought in World War Two, with an obvious focus on why the troops fought so hard for a regime that treated its military personnel so callously. Roger Reese goes a long way toward answering this critical question using solid analytic tools and available sources, and I applaud his effort. However, after reading the book one is still left with questions about how Moscow was able to force so many of its troops to take part in so many futile, even suicidal massed infantry attacks against strong defenses. I think that all of us who have read a lot about the war on the Eastern Front are left wondering about this question and I'm guessing that Reese cannot find more first-hand accounts of particiapnts in such actions to better address the question. Nonetheless, Reese's book is well-organized and he does a great job of reiterating his key judgments. A second, minor criticism is that I would have liked more photographs and other graphics.

Interesting account of the reasons (some obvious, some more complex) why Soviet soldiers fought more or less willingly.
By Bayard B.
Interesting account of the many reasons (some obvious, some more complex) why Soviet soldiers fought more or less willingly in World War II. It's not the frequent simple argument that they fought because the NKVD would execute them if they refused.

Great book overall

Great book overall. These days I don't think that you should deploy OpenStack this way, even for dev support systems. However it is a great learning experience to do it manually and this book takes that approach, and you learn a lot along the way.
