Who was the TRUE author/translator of "The Emerald Tablets of Thoth the Atlantean"? I want to believe but...

Warning: This review might be much more 'in depth' than is warranted by the material itself? Why only 3 stars? Read on.
I purchased my copy of "The Emerald Tablets of Thoth the Atlantean", with the best intentions of curiosity and a quest for the 'Fantastic' as it might apply to humankind's distant past. Heck the title alone speaks of ancient emerald tablets, one of the premier god-kings of pre-dynastic Egyptian mythos and legend; as well as a connection to the lost civilization of 'Atlantis', whatever that may have been? Like one reviewer headlined: "I want to believe"; so, I humbly submit - who could resist? Alas, it is with some disappointment that I feel compelled to report that 'this particular version' or translation of this strange book might not live up to close scrutiny. I will lay out what I have found to make my case, and let the reader decide for themselves.
First, I thought it would be interesting to find out just who J. J. Rover was, as his name is presented prominently on the cover? As it turned out, he does not exist (at least from what I've been able to find). Nothing whatsoever comes up on a Google search, and a further correspondence with another party connected with the "original" interpreter (Dr, M. Doreal), leads me to believe that J. J. Rover is in fact a ghost-writer/interpreter; one who has taken upon himself to profit of Dr. Doreal's original authorship or interpretation. If there is a J. J. Rover out there somewhere, then I welcome you to correct me.
I wish I could leave it at that (and give the good Dr. Doreal his due); however in the course of reading this version of the 'Emerald Tablets' (there are others available); I picked up on a number of idioms, colloquialisms and oddities that lead me to believe that 'Thoth' might not have been the true author. I know what some are thinking; first one has to buy into the somewhat extreme premise that a mythological Egyptian deity from antiquity, actually might have existed? On matters such as the true historicity of certain prominent or preeminent personalities of the distant past, I like to think that some of them were actually flesh, blood and bone beings, who indeed made a name for themselves and were remembered down through the ages. I would give as a few examples of such personalities; Gilgamesh - circa 2900 BC, the Sumerian King of Uruk (biblical Erech); who believed he was two-thirds god and one-third human. Or how about Herakles (Hercules); another 'larger-than-life" demi-god like character. Others might include the biblical Moses, as a pseudo-mythological personality, and yet millions believe that he was a 'real-life' historical character; the same might be argued for Jesus. So before we too hastily dismiss 'Thoth' as a figment of some ancient Egyptian priest's overactive imagination, let's give him the benefit of the doubt, and see if we can't breath a little life into him.
Who was Thoth? Thoth is commonly acknowledged as one of the deities of the Egyptian pantheon, he was the 'God of knowledge", he was represented with the head of the Ibis bird or sometimes a baboon's head. He was acknowledged by the ancient Greeks to be the equivalent counterpart to their god Hermes; one of Thoth's titles was "Three times great, great", which was translated in Greek to "Trimegistos", thus making "Hermes Trimegistus". (See, Wikipedia, "Thoth" for full text.).
While Zecharia Sitchin, offers this; Thoth: A major god of ancient Egypt whose attributes included that of Divine Architect (and thus his Egyptian name TEHUTI = 'Drawer of the Cord' = the Divine Measurer); the Divine Scribe, who recorded the decisions of the gods or the deeds of men when their fate was weighed; god of secret knowledge, god of mathematics, numbers and the calendar; god of magic who could resurrect the dead. He was usually depicted with the head of the Ibis bird (meaning 'Wisdom'). According to Manetho [Egyptian historian, 3rd century BC], Thoth was descended of Ptah, and reigned for 1,560 years when gods alone ruled Egypt. (See Z. Sitchin, "The Earth Chronicles Handbook", p. 204).
We find, that Thoth was many things, not the least of which was "Divine Scribe"; which tells me that there could be a remote possibility that he did in fact write down and archive a great tome; and indeed we learn that the voluminous writings known commonly to us as the "Egyptian Book of the Dead" are attributed to none other than Thoth himself.
(Note, the title "The Book of the Dead" is somewhat of a westernized misnomer, not worth going into detail for this review).
Suffice to say that Thoth could very well have been the author of something like, "The Emerald Tablets of Thoth the Atlantean", and yet I have a doubt.
So, who is Dr. M. Doreal? We find the mysterious name 'Doreal' turn up on the back cover "(See The Great Pyramid by Doreal.)", and again in the preface on page 3, where we find the same message, "See The Great Pyramid by Doreal"; only to find that the preface itself is signed; "In Cosmic Harmony, Doreal Supreme Voice of the Brotherhood"; which lead me to assume that perhaps, I should be doing a Google search on this Doreal character. Suffice to say, I found more than expected; see below:

Maurice Doreal was born Claude Doggins of Sulfer Springs, Oklahoma in 1898 (d. 1963). He looked more like a feed-store owner or small-town banker than the guru he became to his thousand or so followers. He founded his 'Brotherhood of the White Temple' in 1929, naming it after a group of 'Masters' of the same name often invoked by Helena P. Blavatsky's successor Annie Besant (the 'New Age' Theosophical leader - Branton).
He claimed that after serving in the First World War, he traveled to Tibet and spent eight years studying there with the Dalai Lama. Doreal published a series of pamphlets, called the Little Temple Library, on a wide variety of occult-related topics from Atlantis to UFOs. He [claimed to] have gained his knowledge from his contact with the Great White Lodge of Masters, those who have passed beyond their earthly experience and now seek to guide humanity in its evolution. As [a] redundant backup around the World in secure places there are left the authentic ancient "Hermetic" texts, attributed it to the Atlantean priest-king Thoth who wrote it 36,000 years ago.
Claude Doggins aka Maurice Doreal was the author of booklets 'Mysteries of Mt. Shasta', 'Mysteries of the Gobi', 'Polar Paradise', and similar published by the Brotherhood of the White Temple Inc. in Sedalia, Colorado.

That is some bio, and we all have a much clearer idea of just who Dr. M. Doreal, aka. Mauice Doreal, aka. Claude Doggins is, or more clearly, of who he was - back in the day. But what else can we learn? One has only to see (on page 4) of 'Emerald Tablets', in the remainder of the preface to find that, "he [Doreal] was given permission to translate and retain a copy of the wisdom engraved on the tablets. This was done in 1925 and only now has permission been given for part to be published."
Why is this particular passage important? Because it gives us a chronological marker (1925) with which to glean further insight into the mindset of someone extant to that era. What do we find relevant about this period of the twentieth century? We find no less than a resurgence of metaphysics and all things esoteric, rising from the ashes of WWI (then, the greatest known conflict ever to have befallen humanity in recorded history), and the disillusionment of our warlike nature and the destruction and death it incurred:
"During the period when idealism was dominant in philosophy, science had been making great advances. The arrival of a new generation of scientifically minded philosophers led to a sharp decline in the popularity of idealism during the 1920s." (See Wikipedia, "Metaphysics").
In the first quarter of the 20th century, in addition to the afore mentioned 'First World War' (c. 1914-18); we have, but a decade prior, the Wright Brothers - first 'heavier-than-air' powered flight (1903). We have Einstein's 'Special Theory of Relativity" (1905); followed 10 years later with his, 'General Theory of Relativity' (1915); from these theories will come such new concepts as "Space-Time"; now so common as to be a single word, but make no mistake, this was 'cutting-edge' terminology for concepts still relevant today. Additionally we have the "opening of the cosmos" by ever more powerful optical telescopes that are showing our species, new and amazing wonders in the infinite vastness of space. Perhaps even more influential, is a 'contemporary' of that time, Edgar Cayce (1877-1945) aka. "The Sleeping Prophet", who had numerous "sleep-visions" of our shared Atlantean past. (like many others, I am a fan of Cayce and his readings; however I use him as well as the other examples as a 'back-drop' to the environment and possible influence of that era.).
Further we still find the lingering terminology from the swiftly passing 'scientific age of enlightenment', of the late 19th century, such as 'the ether'. A carryover from that recent era; the common acceptance that it was 'the ether' in space that allowed light or gravity waves to move or flow from one place to the other. And yet none of this would be of any significance whatsoever, if not for the sheer volume of such key words as "ether" and "space-time", both of which appear over and over again, 'Ad Infinitum' in the text of the "Emerald Tablets"! Or how about "spaceship", a word of which has little power over us today, but can you imagine the impact of that word in 1925? "A space-what?"
I have a difficult time, accepting that an ancient, exalted god of Egypt would use phraseology, more common with the early twentieth century "Gee- whiz" as a matter of course. On the other hand, I find it perfectly acceptable that a scholar of that same era (circa 1925) would use such 'modern', "Wow Factor" terms, with which to grab the attention of the "unenlightened masses", so to speak.
Oh, but there is so much more to question; such as the seemingly 'bi-location' of "The Halls of Amenti" (try looking that up online!). Where on page 9, titled; EMERALD TABLET II: The halls of Amenti; we find this:
"Deep in the Earth's heart lie the Halls of Amenti, far 'neath the islands of sunken Atlantis,..."
And yet, back in the preface we were informed thus:
"When the time came to leave Egypt, he [Thoth] erected the Great Pyramid over the entrance to the Great Halls of Amenti,..."
To which I say; Hmm?? Did Dr. Doreal (or whomever) forget only a few pages into this work, what had previously been conveyed to the reader? Are we to believe that the so called "Halls of Amenti" are buried deep beneath the islands of sunken Atlantis, as well as below the Great Pyramid at the Giza plateau? Or are we to understand that "Sunken Atlantis" lies beneath the Giza plateau? I find that to be a stretch. (Note; for those of you interested in a set of diagrams, of a "Halls of Amenti-like" complex buried under the sands of Giza, see: Tony Bushby's, "The Secret in the Bible", last 4 pages of book; might be available online as well? Fascinating, to say the least.)
Need an 'ether' fix? See page 15, TABLET IV, titled; "The Space Born". Here I counted no less than five 'ether' references in the last few paragraphs alone.
Like "Darkness"? Then you're going to love page 22, TABLET VI: "The key of Magic". Here one finds such gems as; "Dark is the way the Dark Brothers travel, dark with a darkness - not of the night". (See: Marty Robbins, "I met a girl in the town of El Paso", for the tune!).
It gets worse; from the same page we have:
"The darkness", "ways that are dark", "the Dark Brothers", "the Brothers of Darkness.", "bind with darkness", "who walk in Dark brightness", "even as darkness", "When darkness is banished", "the darkness of night". Anyone else sensing a theme here? This is all on one page folks, and I spared you several repeats! OMG, what on Earth was this guy smoking? The "darkness" in general continues into the following pages; one gets the point; "we have Darkness to deal with!" What else is new?
To elaborate further, to belabor the point, is akin to beating a dead horse until the carcass is unidentifiable; suffice to say, I'm not a little disappointed. I would have loved to report on the virtues and veracity of such an interesting idea as - 'Thoth the Atlantean Priest-king'; and who's to say what Thoth really was, or what he accomplished in some distant epoch (assuming he was real)? However this work - in this published rendering - strikes me as less than genuine, less than amazing, and more like a (well intentioned) ruse.

Nothing different than I already know.

This information is the general information that can already be found by using other sources. The fact that their is more than a few typos in this version lead to the decreased credibility of this edition. Furthermore, the fact that no information can be found about the author upon further research is a little troubling. Not sure if this book abused the already present information in other forms, but the awkward size and length of this edition leads to more questions than answers. Although it is apparent that the emerald tablets aren't in reputable custody, it would be nice to find some new information one of these days. I believe the information on the back has already been written word for word, including the introduction. If you are looking for the current information about the emerald tablets, look no further, but don't expect much more than that.

I want to believe!

Amazing information. I wish I knew more about the author and how, exactly, he obtained this material. Thoth was considered to be a god by the Ancient Egyptians yet, in the book, Thoth speaks of things he did as a living person. So, as much as I would love to believe these Tablets actually exist somewhere and there is documentation to this fact (if it is one) I have to believe the book is a fabricated biography by the author and NOT an autobiography by the alleged writer of the Tablets, Thoth. Either way, a great read!
